Is that what it was called really?

Never been there myself although one side of my family is Irish (from way back).
My family name is Irish.

All my Irish friends here in France are on the "pint" standard. Never heard them mention a "punt".

But my English friend calls me a punter.

I reckon it's a football term.

As for going back to the pound.

Since we are on this subject, apparently the punt ceased to be legal tender in 2002, so if you have any old £50 notes, forward them on to me please...

I think a "punter" means a person betting on horse races.-

In Australia a punter is a person who bets on race horses, however after this years Melbourne Cups result, i guess you mean a parieur or botteur de dégagement
