r3y5a6: Given the decline of USA's influence over economic, diplomatic relation, popularity aspects plus the continued struggling if not turbulent economy.
Choose what country would likely to become the next Superpower.
I don't believe your contention is a 'given' as all nations are going downhill economically and have a long way to go in order to reach the level the US is and has been for decades.
In my opinion, the US has been become less popular to many people in other countries and many countries are showing strength signs of economic prosperity mostly in Asian region whilst the west struggled to recovery.
The UK enjoyed the reign as superpower for around 3 centuries it was too long while the US in just decades of reign now started to weakened maybe because of their war fanatic presidents that mostly contributed to huge debt and worsening the economy.
Perhaps Japan, Iran and Australia are another possible candidates.

From Wiki;
"A superpower is a state with a dominant position in the international system which has the ability to influence events and its own interests and project power on a worldwide scale to protect those interests. A superpower is traditionally considered to be a step higher than a great power.
Alice Lyman Miller (Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School), defines a superpower as "a country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence anywhere in the world, and sometimes, in more than one region of the globe at a time, and so may plausibly attain the status of global hegemony.""
None of your above listed countries has the ability to project power and, few of them have global interests.

Australia, because of its low population has very little influence in the world arena. Moreover, for reasons of security, the government tends not to adopt a unilateral position in foriegn policy.

China doesn't have the ability to project power????? Really???? The US owes China hundreds of Billions and now they are also in talk to buy European bonds. The two most powerfull economies in the West will owe China trillions between them and you say they don't have the ability to project power????
And can I just add a footnote for everyone....Wiki is not fact on matters like this!....Wiki can be wrong....Wiki is put up there by normal folk living at home!.......Wiki is peoples opinions more often that not on these matters and we all know opinions are not fact. Why do people keep going to wiki for info instead of just putting across their point of view!

Good arguement...."China is a Colossus on Clayfeet". Pity you can't tell me why such a statement is true. They have a great foundation for a large economy most economists think. If anything is a Colossus on Clayfeet its the western capitalist sysytem, as it has nearly collapsed a few times in the last 20 years!
Ireland is goin to reign supreme!we have the best guinness in the world.the guinness thats exported is a different brew, tasting nothing like the home stuff and containing rat's piss thus slowly poisioning the rest of the world. All hail the Paddies or forever suffer inferior beverages!
What has that got to do with the other guys statement of China can't project its power?????? The US is now and the EU wll soon be in hundreds of billions or dollars and Euros in DEBT to China. If that is not projecting power I don't know what is! As an Irishman I know the influence that can be weilded on you when you are indebted to another body or country! Just look at that the IMF/EU are doing to Ireland now! So don't tell me China can't project it's power!
snip>The hearing dealt mainly with the Fed's currency swap with the ECB, which amounts to a covert bailout of European banks.
But why did European banks need help from the Fed in the first place? European banks had borrowed dollars short term in international wholesale markets and lent these dollars for the long term to US companies or households. The maturity mismatch is highly risky, because once a bank cannot renew its short-term debts it becomes illiquid.....

What has that got to do with the next superpower? Or weather China can project its power???
On Sunday, Manila dispatched its largest warship, a U.S. Hamilton-class cutter, to Scarborough Shoal, about 125 nautical miles off the main Philippine island of Luzon, after a navy aircraft spotted eight Chinese fishing boats docked in the area.
Philippine security officials were about to detain the fishermen when they were blocked by two Chinese surveillance vessels.

In March last year, Chinese navy ships threatened to ram a Philippine survey vessel in another disputed area, the Reed Bank, In response, the Philippines scrambled aircraft and ships.
Ill-equipped to patrol waters across the archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines has sought closer cooperation with its chief ally, the United States, which has refocused its military attention on Asia.
It has offered Washington greater access to airfields and military facilities in exchange for more equipment and frequent training to enhance its military capability.
Philippines and U.S. forces are to hold a military exercise near the Reed Bank this month.
Class5: How does one determine whether a country is 'culturally superior' to another?
You can't because culture means different things to different people. I don't think any country has the right to think it is superior to another. But the fact is some countries weild more power in the world than others.
