Sparky55: Hello All,

I am considering and in fact have a great opportunity to go and work in either Afghanistan or Iraq late this fall after my retirement is settled. It would be working for an NGO and be geared towards reconstruction. I've been to both countries before and am painfully aware of the dangers but there's a part of me that really feels driven to do this. Would any of you go?

Sorry, I think no , for a different reason.

We started this war.. I can see why so many US contractors have been targeted over there.

I think we should put the Iraqi people to work, give them the profit and pride from rebuilding their country.
It don't make any sense at all that we tear their Country apart.. then many US companies make a profit from rebuilding it doh

Gee..... I wonder why they might want to take shots at US

Greed -- greed--greed...never ending.

Hi Ras,

I can't speak on Iraq and contracting but I know Afghanistan is using a lot of local contractors for construction and other services. Even so, both places have bred greed

I used to want to go back to work for oil companies. Not so much, these days. They paid badly sent me to school and paid well, another time. I read about a guy who was kidnapped for months. I would lose it forever, if I were kidnapped. I barely remain rational these days. Knowing my luck, I would be taken off the bat. That would be the last straw. Best to try to avoid that, for my mental health.

I wouldn't work for oil either. And I'm not too hip on beng kidnapped. But I look at it as there is risk in everything. Still deciding...

Sparky55: Thanks for your comments Patrick. I've never considered my self any braver than anyone else. I have been there and been as scared and appalled as anyone else. Still weighing and deciding.

Wow what a decision to make, since you asked for input I hope you don mind my 2 cents worth. I'm only able to speak from the perspective of the person who needs to make a difference in this life and maybe a bit from the gypsy spirit I have but here goes.

There is the comfortable safe path in front of you but you don't seem to want that right now. There is the job with risk but it is what seems to be pulling you. Now I wouldn't go there but it is not my path. Maybe it would help you to make 2 lists to clarify what you will do. One would be reasons for staying here one would be reasons for going. One list should outweigh the other and it might help you see which one speaks to your heart the most.

For every fork in the road one always seems more the right one despite all evidence to the contrary.

Best of luck in your decision and thank you for looking for input.beer

Funny isn't it when there's a thread asking for advice, somehow even on a sensible thread like this somehow someone can manage to pick a fight and then get abusive.

If this isn't reason enough to question why on earth you are here and whats your motivation for being here i don't know what will.

I think its pretty sad and pathetic and a pretty accurate reflection why some people cant get some self respect and dignity and not display this type of behavior.

It's low, really low.

Thanks for your post skybow. I think the list is a great idea. Your .02 is always welcome. I've noticied your posts on the latest Obama threads, you always seem very well grounded and have an open & fair mind.

I appreciate your input and respect your point of view. I will assure you I have no desire to be shot or die. At the same time I fully recognize the risk as I have already visited both of those places.

Do it , you know where you are going and what is there. If you work in construction you never know for sure if you'r coming home in the evening anyway, may as well get the best money for your efforts.

Thanks Dennis. It's been awhile since I started this thread and I have decided. My decision goes against the advice of the poll but I appreciate everyone's comments none the less. It's just something I feel I must do.
