Hi Dear! Good topic!! I just would like to extend my idea a little more. Those good manners are really very nice and I appreciate them; however, if a guy doesn't use them BUT he's respectful and a nice person I don't care about it.

LifeThirst: Men are also invited to share their experiences from ladies if and when they behaved so! ;-)
I've always held doors open/wait back for both ladies andgents and always will . Largely I find that courtesy is acknowledged but when they just walk on without saying a word, I usually say "You're welcome"

Your response reminded me of this anecdote (said to be true).
Two friends met on a dirt road in Appalachia. The first guy, Jeb, had two huge black eyes. The second guy, Sam, asked in alarm., "Hey Jeb, how did you get them shiners"? Jeb drawled, "Well, believe it or not, it happened in church". "Church"! Sam hollered. "Now how in the hell did that happen to you in church"? "Wellllll", Jeb sheepishly replied, "When we all got up to do the singin', there was this big ol woman standin' right in front of me, and her housecoat got caught in her crack, you know. Well, I couldn't stand it much longer, so to help her out, I yanked it out, and she turned and decked me". "I can certainly understand that", Sam said. "But how did you get the other black eye"? "Wellllll", Jeb stuttered, "I got to feelin' so bad about the whole thing, I went ahead and tucked it back in".

American men really seem to resent a kind gesture to another man, they are so torqued about their precious butch-ness. Once, as I was hurrying to get into a downtown Portland restaurant, the guy in front of me (a pissy yuppie type) let go of the door on purpose, but karma was on my side as it "stuck", giving an appearance of him holding it for me. I cheerfully thanked him (!) and he had a hissy fit, telling me he didn't open the door for me, who did I think I was, etc....the maitre de stepped over and asked him to be quiet or leave. He left. American men are so dreadfully rude sometimes.

How about this for old fashioned gentlemanly behaviour......we have a guy who always stands up when ladies come to the bridge table and waits until they are seated before sitting himself. But I agree with Urbuddy.........these are courtesies normally shown to both genders, i.e on public transport, young women would give their seats to elderly gentlemen.
I know im perfectly capable to Open the door for myself and pulling out a chair as well ... lol ... but that a gent. bothers to do so for me ... kinda shows his "protective" instinct and I think It's adorable-....

chiv·al·ry 1. the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms. 2. the rules and customs of medieval knighthood. 3. the medieval system or institution of knighthood. 4. a group of knights. 5. gallant warriors or gentlemen: fair ladies and noble chivalry.
men decided to extend this to opening doors...pulling out chairs etc to show their respect to a woman.
the feminist movement was to make sure women got equal rights..
women and men are different but equal..i certainly do not wish to be a man but i want to be valued as an equal human.
if it was called the human rights movement towards those with a womb..
wouldnt it look childish if men stopped being nice to a fellow human and showing his enjoyment of their company, to show how upset he is women can demand equal pay for an equal job, or have a life as they see fit.
Did men do chivalrous acts just to fit in? they didnt really want to open that door?
on a personal note..I open doors for men..they do it for me..and we always graciously thank each other..
luckily there were some chivalrous men in her life and city who used it for good..and not just for their own benefit.
Its about time women were chivilrous to men, like taking their hats of to them, laying their coats in a puddle for them, staying on the boat and letting the men into the life boats and staying on board while the ship goes down, lol women were opressed.
I think it shows the kind of person they truly are. If you were brought up with good manners (what your parents taught you) i think it shows respect. Unfortunately, a lot of people dont have this and its sad!. I would hold the door open if im going through it first, for whoever is behind me.
