I am one of those people that has to deal with petitions on a regular basis. Often people on those petitions have no relativity to the petition (aka Minney Mouse) or are so removed that the petition request will have no impact on them.
Having just been asked to sign a petition through a 'social media' outlet, I still have my doubts to the validity of petitions. I was asked to sign up with a petition to "Ban shooting in National PArks."
My response was "I will sign it the day they have removed every non-native animal from the National Parks." And have had some very good resonses "What you said."

Hiah...
So you dont think that natives should be culled sometimes.? I def think they should...
In NT they culled the crocs and it was safe to swim in the waterholes and go camping when they finished the cull... Clearly they didn't wipe out the species because now - 40 years on, they are in prolific proportions once again...?????

Hi Merri, more to the point on not signing this petition was that we need to rid the National Parks of the contrary animals. I have seen first hand the devastation pigs are doing to koalas in the Pillaga region. And also the impact of of overpopulation of "protected" species on other native animals in other places.
We have lost a lot of our native species through feral animals taking over regions. And many more without some controls. Roxby Downs Uranium Mine, contrary to "popular opinion" has healthier frogs tha the rest of Australia. And frogs are a very good indicator of environmental conditions.
Roxby Downs has been at the pointy end of the stick because of uranium mining but people limit themselves to the negative aspects. They have set aside some exclusion areas (no non-native animal access) and there are now many native species (flora and fauna) active in these areas that have not been noted for many years.
I do not disagree with culling, it is just the total exclusiveness of the 'shooting ban' until we get the balnace right.
we had this uni mob employed by our local bumbling council who got a motion through to ban footpath trading. Next minute they're employing the services of business execs to give us tips on ways to increase our t/overs during the recent down turn in retail sales, 1 of the key methods they mentioned was - footpath trading. @#$%&*

I sign petitions If I know what they are about and if they are valid petitions that is doing something contructive i.e. help the local community, rally behind a cause (save the pandas) type of thing.... it all depends on what or who is behind the petitions...

I have copped a bit about this one, and a bit of support, for my comment. And this petition has hit national media.
There is already a Law that prohibits hunting in National Parks. But there are always people out there who do things illegally. Must admit to receiving a Deer rump shot in a National Park but they do not belong anywhere in Australia.
Legal shooting in National Parks is only done with National Parks approval to rid them of vermin or to reduce the overpopulation of some species that will impact on the balance of native species in an area.
