I do alot of travelling, I'm currently in Kauai for two months. When I visit a new locale I always try to get to the off the beaten path places which the locals frequent. The amature travellers mistake is to only hit the tourist venues. When you follow that approach you miss out on the real life day to day experience that the city has to offer.
I have been wanting to visit India for many years, there is a religious festival called "dvali" if im not mistaken, as for where to go, where ever the journey would take me...
Second choice would be Egypt, though thats mainly for its pyramids and historical artfacts...
I wouldn't be up for just a sun and sand holiday, bore me to tears...
How you answer the poll depends on why you're visiting the new city, I think.
GACryptic & I will be visiting San Diego CA this spring - to visit with my brother & his wife, who moved there. So, it'll be a "new city" for both of us, but in this case "Places popular with the locals" would be the answer.
In late summer or early fall we'll be touring North Carolina. The whole itinerary's not set, but we do plan to end up in Raleigh for a couple of days. Why? The North Carolina Museum of Art. So, in that case, "Historically or culturally important places" would apply.
There's a fine line between "Tourist attractions" and "Historically or culturally important places," too. Some are worth seeing, in a "new city," but not worth repeating on return.
Poll: If you were visiting a new city, where would you be most excited to go?
Tourist attractions or entertainment venues. Historically or culturally important places. Places popular with the locals. Home. Other.
Their "red Light District"! It is usually old, therefore historical as well as hysterical; has lots of 'entertainment' venues; "Red Light" areas are also usually culturally important places and very popular with the locals, both male and female. Bars/ cantinas galore so you'll never need go thirsty and always lots of shows to watch, be it girls on stage or drunks fighting or shooting each other in the street...Life in all its wonderful and bizarre forms...
I would love to visit the whole world but ... to name a few
Petra, Jordan (The whole city) Athens, Greece (Acropolis) Bruges, Belgium (From pictures I can see one of the most beautiful cities in Europe) Amesbury, England (Stonehenge) Cairo, Egypt (Pyramids)
