I believe that it is in acceptance of our place in life that we learn to blossom where we are planted. In essense one is allowing life to be what it will be and adapting there outlook and attitude around the situation (life)/be a good attitude or a bad is up to the individual. Life is not fair. Life is not always happy. But it is how we deal with lifes events that can give or take away our peace of mind
I think we should be asking you this question all297. After all, you are the one living in Krungthep Mahanakhon the Earthly centre of fatalistic attitude. Beneath the gently pervading shroud of Buddhist teaching, learning to accept one's fate and be at peace with it is fundamental to achieving happiness, is it not?
Personally I have found that the older I get the less I believe in fate or destiny and while everything that happens to us in life may not be entirely random, I believe I exert probably not more than 20% control over my circumstances and simply try my best to enjoy the other 80% over which I seem to have none.
We are all given a 'This is your life' book of blank pages to fill with delightful and not so delightful experiences that life will throw at us. Some we have control over and some we dont. However it is the way we interpret all situations and the decisions we make for ourselves, that can either ensure reaching that peak of our existence, or be consistently taking the scenic route in meandering lanes on the mountainsides of life.
The only person stopping one from reaching their goals in life etc is yourself.
I believe in destiny...to a point. I also believe in seizing control of your destiny and shaping your life into what you need and want. Im more pro-active than re-active

God has predestined what we will freely do, in regards to our eternal destiny. However, our choices will determine our outcome in the end. God bless!

A interesting,still tricky question.....Hmmmm...double hmmmm,-for several minutes I´ve been scratching my head,(the one on my shoulders),-but can´t come up with a good answer....Too academic for me.I guess.....

Conrad73: so,where the Heck is your Free Will then?
God allows man to have free will. We are allowed to make choices, good or bad. Yes, God has an individual plan for each person, but we are free to make choices whether we will follow that plan or not. If we follow God's plan, our life will be a good one and we wind up with a happy eternity. If we choose not to follows God's plan for our life, oh well, you had your chance.
I believe some of our paths are chosen. An example of this was a woman who decided not to eat in the food court at the Toronto Eaton Centre on the day of the shooting there. If she had gone to the food court that day, she would have been at the table where someone else was shot since it was the table she used every day. After this incident, she went to Colorado for a visit and got shot and killed at the movie theatre.
Someone explained it this way: "If God doesn't exist, then I have lost nothing in believing in Him - we would simply die and go into eternity. From dust to dust, with no consequences. But, just suppose for one second that God really does exist. That means that there is God, heaven, and hell. And eternity is a long, long time." Hell is a horrifying place, and to be there for eternity would be unimmagineably awful. There are more verses in the Bible talking about hell than about heaven, because God is so urgent about warning people about hell.

hiya 2I i didn't know that....sure makes one wonder about things like 'destiny'...doesn't it.
i don't believe in accidents. but how much is destiny, or determinism, or even the idea of preagreements... plays a part ....i just don't know...
guess i'm just not ready to give up on the idea of free will. sometimes i think the games are already established, but we still have some choices on how we play them. just not sure if it effects any real outcomes beyond how we perceive or feel each event.
Before the world even existed, God predestined certain people to be saved and to do His work here on earth. One great example is the Apostle Paul who met God on the road to Damascus (in the form of a bright light.) Paul is the very best example of a converted Christian, and he accomplished more for Christianity than almost any other man that's ever lived on earth. Others who are not necessarily predestined to be saved are also free to choose to follow God. It's their choice.
By the wzy, for the record, que sara sara (whatever will be will be) is totally contrary to what the Bible teaches. It's an either/or deal.
I believe that everything happens for a reason. Nothing is by chance. All the people you meet each day (people in the store, people driving, people walking down the street, seekers who want to learn about one's faith, etc.), all these people are put in your path each day for a reason. We may not know what that reason is, but God does.

Hiya Jono...hope all is well with you
I'd like to think that all the choices we make are not predetermined by some unseen/unknown force. We choose the way we play out our lives and I often wonder if the outcome of certain things will remain unchanged no matter how we play the game of life. I think a lot of people are intrigued by the notion of predetermination and destiny. The movie "Final Destination", and four other productions after it was extremely popular. I watched all of them and when the woman got shot and killed, it reminded me of this movie and the concept that there might be some truth to the story. Kinda creepy...

Maybe that person on the street that looks depressed just needs a smile or a hug. The harried grocery clerk that just got yelled at by a customer might need an encouraging word. That person who just had an accident might need someone to stay with him/her until help comes. They are all around us - people with needs, some simple, some more comples, but they all are put in our path for a reason.

Human compassion and empathy sure can go a long way in helping others struggling through the journey of life. Actually, doing so feels damn good!!
no we have the power to go where we want to go and do what we want...society constrains us into believing we are stuck in a certain spot but the power of the mind and control over your will can alter your destiny...

2I boggles my wee mind it does....lol i wonder...if two folks are both at the same event, one walks away happy but the other is sad... same event...just two different perceptions of it... it has not changed the event. sometimes i wonder if all we have is our perceptions and subsequent feelings
those final D movies were shot here. i was on set a few times. loved the tanning booth mishaps...lol. but they do play on the question of 'can we change our destiny' and i wonder about that. i think on one level we are responsible for much of what we have in our lives ( you know...getting what we dwell on...lol) and for how we act/react in our own lives. but for those 'events' which appear beyond one's personal sense of control...just not sure about those...lol...
