I loathe smoking. It disgusts me on every level. I do not, however, believe in using the apparatus of the state to impose my lifestyle choices upon others. Anyone who does would be more at home in North Korea. What I would do, however, is withdraw all taxpayer-funded medical treatment for problems caused by smoking. Medical problems caused by smoking are self-inflicted injuries. Also, treatment given is an exercise in futility because they are a smoker. This is why some surgeons refuse to operate on smokers, or bump them to the bottom of the list. Try getting a transplant if you are a smoker. The psychological profile of a smoker is most unflattering. Anyone who is curious should look up the papers published in various journals about the psychology of smokers and how tobacco companies exploit this in advertising.
If we ban smocking who will stock the shelves at the grocers? Who will help me pick out flowers for a first date? I tell you we need these wearers of smocks and all the valuable services they provide. I say NO to a ban on smocking!

Yep I completely agree, and lets add to that list any alcohol related illness, any illness contracted while on holiday, or even when at work, in fact, lets just stop all medical treatment, think of all the money we could save, and use for what's really important like killing each other

tomcatwarne: Yeh. next thing you know someone will suggest banning alcohol..... Oh they already tried that in America.
yeah, it's nice to visit places in the EU like most places in Italy where you can have your beer in public without having to have it in a brown paper bag.

tomcatwarne: Well I did hear they were banning farting, because of the pollution to the ozone layer, but that would certainly upset a certain lady who comes on here, some of what you fancy does you good. They can't take all the fun out of life
Gaseous farts make for excellent flame throwing...that's a sport in itself...do we ban sports too.

I don't know about Australia, but in New Jersey, the tax levied on cigarettes pays for the uninsured patients. So the truth, at least there, is exactly the opposite of what you say. Moreover, smokers die younger, statistically. Therefore, they should pay less in health insurance. Those who do not smoke tend to suffer in greater numbers from alzheimer, dementia etc. which is far more costly over the course of their longer life. As to the psychological profile... well, that is not even worth the paper it is written on. Presumably those profiles are no different for coffee addicts, alcoholics or food addicts. Quite frankly, my first choice would be to ban all corn based sugars and derivatives. The spectrum of diseases from fatty (converted) foods outweighs the damage by smoke in terms of cost. I know this from my insurance company in Germany where the laws prohibit arbitrary cost increases without proper science in the health/insurance fields.

That went soooo well to didn't it? What did prohabition get us? Oh yeah...really swell blokes like Al Capone rose to power supplying illegal booze to the speak easies in the Chicago area.
At least one good thing came from it, my great grandfather had to get out of Chicago fast because he was running a bit of a competing business with Mr Capone out of the back of his butcher shop. I'm glad I don't live in that hell hole of a city!
If I could move somewhere where smoking, alcohol and junkfood were completely banned, and not imported,I would.I worry all the time what I'm doing to my health and quit, but it's just sooo hard when the whole country drinks and smokes everywhere. The supposed smoking ban is a joke over here,it's just an ashtray ban,so we all use the floor, passive smoking keeps cravings alive, calling for superhuman strength to stay quit, which I can only manage for a few weeks

If only they did this in the U.S. Insurance companies here charge whatever the market will bear.
Banning to smoke tobacco or banning to sell tobacco?
If someone forbids smoking it just does not make sense to permit selling it.
And if forbid selling, the state will automatically lose income partly billionaires who support the health care system, and many other things.
In contrast, a new gang of tobacco dealers will contribute to the insecurity and the business of the mafia. Bad business, and to prohibit something that the government should implement a means to enforce the ban, and that's another public spend.
sure let's ban smoking then drinking and why stop there i'm sure there are other things people do that don't fit into everyone's life style,,,, so it would be nice if every one lived and think alike,,,,NOT
One time at the local hospital, I was sitting in the parking lot, waiting for the nurse to bring a patient out to me. A women in a wheelchair came outside for a bit. She had an oxygen tank on the wheelchair, and she started smoking. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. First of all, she could blow the hospital off the map, and secondly, smoking was probably what got her in the wheelchair in the first place.
i don't think it's fair to single out snickers for additional taxes... as for banning smocking.. i'm all for smocking, and the more creative, the better...

It was probably only an e cylinder she was hooked up to and she would just severely burn herself...it's survival of the fittest at work there.
