A_Non_A_Moose: I guess it depends on what a person seeks. I am from another country yet have had wonderful experiences in the US be it in small town (just a handful of people) to a metropolis like NY City! It is really no different wherever you go,....some people go to France to experience Paris whereas others go into the countryside into small villas to experience what that has to offer. What it all really boils down to, at least for me, is what I want to see, and the people that I meet! Real American life can be found anywhre in America,...its all a matter of perspective and what it is you seek! JMHO!
I like what you are saying here! I see candio's point tho also - and well, since you are a music fan too, let me explain it this way....listen to jason aldean's song "Fly Over States"
it's about the beauty of the American breadbasket - the farmland that can feed the world!! (and I wish it would!). this is a big country - to completely overlook the heartland of america is a mistake in my opinion - too many impressions about america are made from news stories that happen in the big cities - they also do not represent life in most of this country
i've been to the states a lot, and lived and worked in ohio for three years and have good friends there. i was very sad to leave there. lived in boulder, colorado for one year as well. enjoyed many places and sites with favorite being new orleans. haven't been to joshua tree national park and would really like to visit there (lotsa other places on my todo list as well).

Really Jack? When you say "family" do you have a wife and children or do you mean your parents as well? How's it going over there these days? I hope not to challenging. ;-}

It would actually be my second visit,although I was so young last time it hardly counts really,although I do remember liking San Francisco so I'd definitely wanna go back there,and I'd go to Nashville,infact I'd probably get a vehicle and do the road trip thing,can go everywhere then,that'd be what I'd do I reckon.

If you want excitement and bright lights then go the big cities New York, Vegas, Chicago, Nashville.
If you want so see the culture of the U.S. then definitely go to Washington, D.C. The Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincolns Memorial, Arlington Cemetary especially Section 60, and all the monuments to various wars. The Reflecting Pool between the Capitol and Lincolns Memorial with beautiful cherry blossoms.
If you want to see beauty go to the Grand Canyon, a marina filled with commercial fishing boats pulling out at 4:00 a.m., a John Deere tractor harvesting his wheat in the mid-western states, the snow mountains of Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, the Redwood Forest in Oregon and northern California.
There is a lot of beauty in America but there is also a lot of sadness when you see the memorial at Wounded Knee, the place were so many indians were killed by American soldiers. I don't recommend this unless you are interested in the history of the American indian.
