This may not apply to you, as I don't know how other countries take care of their old people. We are taking care of the old here, it seems at the expense of the young and their future.

I've got 9 months to go and I'll be 65.I already draw some benefits from my late husband's passing.
Besides our governemnt has been using this scare tactic about social Security going broke for quite some time.

Yes, I believe it won't be there in five-years when I turn 65. But, I don't care about it because didn't pay much into it.

How did you manage not to contribute to SSI? Did you opt out? It's a wonder that SSI is still around with politicians raiding the SS trust fund whenever they feel like it. Can you imagine where we would be today if W succeded in privatizing Social Security and forcing everybody to put that money into the stock market just before the recession hit? That was thankfully his big FAILURE.

most government employees pay into their own public retirement system, not the SS ponzi scheme.
you might have a valid point about the failure thing. On the other hand, though, most of our debt we owe to ourselves because congress (not the president) robbed peter (SS trust fund) to pay the paul -- the private bankers for things we can't afford to begin with.

It's unlikely that there will be much of a welfare state left by the time that I retire.
The post war baby-boom meeting with the more recent Feminist baby-bust has had a disastrous effect. There will be too many old people and not enough young.
And before we even get to the above we have the problems of the debt and the mickey mouse economy.

It is a system that has been going on for awhile, and I don't know how much you know about Social Security but what you get is determined by what you worked and put in. Granted!! I am not sure all of the numbers and calculations, I am not at that point in life. Interesting thing last night as I was reconfiguring a server backup and doing some scanning for virus rootkits at my CPA's firm. He and I were talking about a situation where a client had a group of illegal aliens working for him as "Independent ContractorS" and my CPA said "no" you can't do that, they are employees and have to have social security numbers. anyway, long story short, though they are putting FICA Social Security in they will never take it out, they can not. the Cards are fraudulent, so..... that times how many I don't know but it is not a drop in the bucket. There is money being put in there, as long as we can trust our government I think it should be ok. ;-}
Ccincy: I remember when Bush wanted to privatize SS but Congress wouldn't let him.Now Obama is playing the similar game.The only I can see it going broke if our gov lets it.
I heard that even if it "changes" folks like us won't be affected. The major change that surely WILL take place, and I can talk turkey on this one (because I worked with ICD-9 Coding/Formulary/Practitioners Variance Board)--is Medicare. (A little secret: Medicare would work if they did it right). JMO

Social Security (Social Security Trust Fund and Federal Disability Insurance Trust Fund) own the most Treasuries - $2.72 trillion. That is more than what the Federal Reserve is owed for stimulating the economy and stupidly keeping interest rates low since 2009.

My guys mother and older sister are both on Medicare and they still have to pay out of pocket for some of the meds they take.
I was under the impression that Medicare was supposed to pay/cover most of if not all costs but I guess that doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh no. Also, something many don't know until they "get there"--you must carry another insurance through Medicare for the prescription costs, it's anywhere from 35.00 to over 100.00 a month more. Medicare works like many private insurances, too--you pay (usually) about 20%. Many people think that doctors take a "hit" on Medicare patients. This is only true of the ones who don't pay their co-pays and percentages. If Medicare pays it's share, and you pay yours, the doc gets his fair and total fee. FYI

Yabut, We are just entering the first wave of Baby Boomers retiring. This is a global trend. Its also a 30 year uptrend. I think this will have great impact on how seniors are regarded in society. Also they are the ones that are hammering out pension agreements. I think this will be a positive movement for retirees.
