A LABOR backbencher will not take part on the Federal Election day because it falls on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull was among the first to voice his disappointment on Twitter when he tweeted "Deeply disappointed that Julia Gillard chose to hold the election on Yom Kippur - the most solemn and sacred day of the Jewish year".

The Jewish Sabbath is a day of rest, when many Jews perform no work whatsoever. For the ultra-orthodox, "work" includes trivial activities like turning on appliances and light switches and even using a pen.

Israel’s health ministry has admitted to injecting female Ethiopian Jewish immigrants with a birth control drug in an effort to reduce their birthrate and control the immigrant population.

Last Sunday the Haaretz newspaper published a letter written by Ron Gamzu, the director general of the country’s health ministry, in which he responds to comments made by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and ordered several organisations treating Ethiopian women to stop administering birth control injections. In the past, the Israeli government has denied giving contraceptive drugs to cut the birth rate among immigrants.

Israeli warplanes have attacked a target close to the Syrian-Lebanese border following several days of heightened warnings from government officials over Syria's stockpiles of weapons.

Syrian state television said that military command had confirmed a "scientific research centre" north-west of Damascus was struck at dawn on Wednesday, causing damage. Two people were killed and five wounded in the attack on the site, which was engaged in "raising the level of resistance and self-defence".

robplum: because you travel all over the country you can apply to be enrolled as an itinerant elector, which means you only vote in the commonwealth election, not state...one down...

You will find most are at a simular mind set as you, we just don’t care! And its more off voting against who you don’t want running the country! Rather than who you may think has any idea on how to run a country?

We have a state election long before that, and the two major party’s are out spending our money again?
We need another choice! As we cant afford the idiots we have now!

We don’t need monuments to politicians, we just need to be able to pay for our cost off living now?

This was meant as a post in jest, like voting them off the island?

We could always threaten other nations that if they don’t stop the boat people we will use those boats to send our unwanted politicians to their lands! As refugees!

Just picture Tony and Julia arriving in a boat in China?

This may be politically incorrect! But the kid came too me saying that bloody Rangger just put the next election 14 days after my birthday! So I will have to Vote!

Well its not as bad as when entering the polling booths with her mother years ago and being asked at the top off her voice! Who do we vote for?

Ok! There both blondes! So I had to say everything twice!

I don’t know who I am voting for as yet this year as they have all lost touch with what the people really want? Affordable living!

I don’t use public transport!
I rarely need to see a doctor!
The kid has left school!

What I want is value for money!
I am sick off politicians flying all over the world at my expense too look at toilets? After a night on the grog! Which we also payed for?

Rob - I was replying to the Poll Question or the thread - not to anyone in particular. It just so happened that my post followed yours.

As my father in law used to say "at a bbq you don't talk about politics, religion or football - unless you want to loose a few friends??" cool

Dunno so i google to see what others said about it, some the following:

I got fined for not voting in a state election a few years back. I took the punt and sent in an excuse. (I think it was double fine if they rejected your excuse). Never heard back from them. My excuse was that I was working away that weekend and if they expected me to miss work they were in fairy land or something of that nature.

Being a council election in guessing u had to vote via mail? Easy " my vote was lost in the mail and I am beyond angry that my vote did count towards an election I felt strongly about"

If you say you don't vote for religious reasons, then they'll wipe the fine.

Write them an extremely angry letter stating in no uncertain terms that you DID vote and that you now want proof that your vote was actually counted!

What if you went to vote like I did in Sydney but it was so busy and after waiting over a hour you was still inline to vote.. Tried to vote at other places with same result then just gave up...

If it was a local council by-election, you would have only been able to vote in your area. Just say you were out of the area for the whole day.

I had this happen to me at the previous Vic state election.. I did a pre-poll vote in my own electorate, and then a few months later got a letter saying I didn't vote.
So I replied saying I did, and never heard anything more luckily.

Council elections are normally postal only, so the simplest solution (besides paying the fine) is to write in saying that you most certainly did send in your postal vote and that it must have been lost.
It is then your word against theirs. The council would have to take it up with Australia Post, who aren't going to be able to prove anything either way.

Every single time I got issued a fine.
Every single time I gave them the reason that I was called out to work.
Never had to pay a thing. Ever.

Send a letter saying you did vote, provide a location and a time. Say that the person at the polling place screwed up and didn't mark you off the list. They can't prove that you weren't actually there.

I am Christian, which means that I am a follower of Jesus. I know Jesus' position is strictly neutral to politics, and he would not have voted. Therefore, I would be contradicting myself as a Christian if I were to take a side in political affairs.

'your dog was having puppies' - my dad was actually trying to look after my dog when she had puppies - didnt want to leave her, and no-one else was home! - so was excused! lol

Tell them you went to the polling station, but they told you that you weren't on their list. I've used it (cos it was true, though!) and got off.

About 6 months later i got a letter telling me i had my license suspended until i paid $145 instead of the original $50.

I missed a state election vote because I was working overseas.

I missed a state election vote because I was working overseas.

They sent me a letter about it, but when that arrived I was back overseas again. I ignored the whole thing – I had far more important things going on in my life at the time.

Eventually they took my driving licence away, as I didn't pay the state fine.

I had to pay something like $500 in the end, plus renew my licence.

voting is abit like drying dags , you have to turn the crap over or they will rot the woolshed floor , stink the place out , attract flies . If your leaders are no good , turn em over . We have a low turnout here as nobody has to vote which makes a persons vote count more . I do love the long faces on election night of the worst MP's being dumped .

Um rob! council elections are not compulsory here in the west! In fact I have only ever voted in one! That was when I lived around the corner from my mum, as she was always complaining that the council never listened to her? So I pushed her into voting for the one that said they were trying to do what mum wanted?

Yes I am bad, I made a little old lady put up or shut up!

Victoria has always been "get down to the polling booth" until this year.

WA has to have postal voting because most people do not want to drive 600kms to the nearest polling booth. Crossed into WA many years ago and a sign said "Welcome to Leonora Shire." 600kms later, we got there.

But in the more civilised parts of Australia, we have schools that are used as polling booths.

Blizzard14u: We have elections for local councils too but they are not compulsory, we don’t pay them!

In NSW 10 years ago, each Councillor where I was got a "Ward Allowance" of $x,000 to pay for stationary, phone, stuff like that to do with work as a Councillor. And the Mayor had a car to use during his term.

They also had $15,000 each as a "Ward Allocation" but it could only be spent on some work he wanted done in the ward. Might be a new playground, near path.

Surprised when I found out that Councillors in Victoria are well paid for what they do. No surprise when I had 22-24 candidates in my ward this time.

Okay, some do a lot of work for the community but how many times do I hear "The Councillor promised me that you would fix this problem for me."frustrated frustrated frustrated And the Council had already decided in the budget that no money was going to be spent on doing that.frustrated frustrated frustrated

I sent her an Email to let me know the next time she was in WA so I could slit her throat! But sure lets get rid off the stupid picture, and the ridiculous cost!

These politicians need their heads kicked in! as they have lost the plot!

All I want from them is affordable living! To have a few dollars left at the end off the week? To spend on what I want! Other than bills and taxes!

Maybe then the shop owners will get someone in their shops again?

Just think! An economy that works again? And not this stupid tax grab and electricity robbery for polls and wires? I don’t have polls in my suburb? And it took them three weeks to acknowledge that I produce twice more electricity than I use Each day!
