What do you mean they vanished? I don't understand how people could become unfriendly when you ask about things to do there.
When I first moved to Ohio 7 years ago I found some people coming off to be nothing but a bunch of whiners. Then after living here for a while I found they weren't all that way.
Like anywhere else some are going to be friendly and others not so friendly.
I lived in Southern Cal for 3-1/2 yrs and didn't like it there.
The reasons for making a move are personal to the individual. First of all, to make a move to a strange place takes gumption, so how you develop your life there is down to your own tastes. In any community there are get-togethers of some sort........whether it be in churches, pubs, or clubs. To integrate you have to get involved.

My daughter and I went to view a property for her last Friday and we stopped a couple of biddies to ask for directions.
They were terribly worried about us walking with the baby buggy up the side of the mountain (it was 20 minutes hard going!), asked if we were moving to the area and one in particular was all over my daughter with welcomes and wishes that she should become part of the community.
Given my daughter is a very young mum, has purple hair and more piercings than you can shake a stick at (she's studying fine art at the local college and as such, not the most conventional person to walk the Welsh Valleys), she was enormously relieved to have had such a warm, non-judgemental welcome. She said it made all the difference to her.
I just wanted to share this lovely story and the fact that I'm gonna bear hug that biddy next time I see her.

I lived in N Wales for a while, Anglesy, whilst doing flying training. I found the N Walians a genuine and friendly people. When I wen to the pub tney changed from their first language (Welsh) to English for my benefit. I still have friends there, and hope to visit back one day.
