We have a large community here on CS and we all speak English; with varying degrees of success. Then I wonder: What do all these people speak at home? Half of them probably just talking shìt – like me, but still in what language do they do it at home. I for one, speak a language spoken by no more than about 3 million people worldwide. So tell us, what do you speak (other than shìt) at home. And tell me in what country you speak your language.
I speak Afrikaans. It is a language that developed from Dutch, English and French primarily. I think Flemish is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch as I understand it better.
Mostly a mixture of British English and Australian English....yes, they are different as they have different terms for different things and different sayings
Catfoot: Hmm, that's a very popular sentiment, but be carefull - the language may soon be lost for future generations.
I think it's lost from now 'cause I can't speak it so well. My mom speaks it only when she wants to caution me or tell me a secret in public. Sooooo pidgin english is what I know.
paradox42: Hi ms Pisceslady, I wonder the difference, could you please describe even a bit? thanks
Hi Paradox, I don't think she's around anymore. It differs like English and American. Just like South African or Canadian English, They all have small regional differences and sayings.

catfoot, basicly we still use the same dictionaries in flanders as they do in holland. However the choice of words used in daily speach will vary from region to region. And ofcourse their are many big differences in all dialects. My own dialect has many words that wouldn't be understood even by people living only a few miles away from my home.
Maar algemeen nederlands zou je vrij eenvoudig moeten kunnen begrijpen. hetzelfde geld voor duits..als ze traag praten of schrijven in dit geval en je bent een beetje creatief met taalgebruik zou je ongeveer 90% moeten kunnen begrijpen.
Let me translate for the others... the polite thing to do... When it comes to standard dutch you should understand pretty much everything i say. Same would go for german, if someone speaks it slow or write in this case, and if you can be a bit creative with language (especially knowledge of the older words and dialects) you should be able to understand about 90% of it. The rest you should be able to fill in by logical reasoning.
