Never heard of the new romantic era. But I do remember my girlfriend buying me pink jeans and stuff like that. So that's what it was about!

I was thinking of the 80s and the song... " Like a Virgin"... I like the new version
Abagail: I think we simply have to remember old fashioned values. Although... even the use of that term is debatable. Who defines values?!
But if you like, I will be in the corner dinging a bell for you.
i try to be romantic all the time,in an 'old fashioned' way,if you know what i mean.chivalary is important to me too. .i'll get into the ring now,so you can be ready with the bell! (probably won't make it past the first round!)

I was born in the 60's so I grew up hearing a lot of people talk about poular music's 'Golden Era' and certainly the 60's was where pop was born. The 70's were an embarrasing wasteland and I expressed a great sigh of relief when the '80 arrived and New Romance swept the musical landscape.
For me it was the renaissance. Brilliant tuneful, thoughtful music, generated by attractive, intelligent people on new-age technology, the likes of which we had never heard before and the sounds were otherworldly.
So many good bands in such a short space of time like Duran Duran, Talk Talk, Genesis, Psychedelic Furs, Ultravox, Tears for Fears, Visage, Flock of Seagulls, U2, Mr Mister, A-ha, The Police, Icehouse...the list just goes on.
Personally, I believe the best was produced in the early part of the decade and reached its zenith in 1984. The decade petered out after that but I remember vividly hearing Ultravox's 4th album "Lament" in 1984 and thinking that it must have been written by aliens. I had never heard such beauty before and seldom have since.
For me it was the king of songwriting decades. Pop music had come of age and the protagonists (mostly British) were demonstrating that it was a serious pursuit as well as a valid art-form.

i couldn't have stated the case for it better myself!i agree 100% with everything you say.i also feel that after 1984 the music scene started to go downhill rapidly, but from 80-84....wow,what a ride!
Was there what! You should have been there Abagail. I know you're a music freak - you would have been totally in your element. You would have worn those long dresses that were popular in the early '80s and would have been the most popular girl in town!
