When the British captured the Transvaal mint at the end of the Boer war a lot of gold was missing. Only Paul Kruger could have taken it. He often was seen removing gold from the mint. Paul Kruger, a corrupt old man, was already a very rich man. He fled to Switzerland and died there three years after the war. Very little money was found in his house. What happened to all that money? And his personal wealth? Nothing was ever recovered.
GUZMAN1: Wasn't Jan Smuts who led the gold away from the brits?
No, I don't think he was involved in this, Guzman.
We had an argument about this and now this fella is now upset with me. He’s trying to annoy me with this poll. Granted, Paul Kruger did some things wrong, like giving all the business concessions to his friends and family, but he did not steal the state’s money. He did travel around with lots of gold bullion and minted coins, but that was to pay his soldiers. Quite a few mercenaries too. French, German, Spanish and even a few Russians. Some with rank.
They were fighting a guerrilla war and he damn well could not pay them with cheques. The entire economy was destroyed. Only the gold mines were operating, mostly secretly. They had to buy food through Mozambique. With gold!

We spoke about Smuts in one of your blogs. I don't know very much about the history of your country but I readed Smuts biography to know a few about the Boer Wars.
And now I found it in wikipedia, the story of the gold train which I readed years ago:
"The government of the Transvaal fled from Pretoria to convene in Machadodorp. These reverses hardened Smuts' resolve. He ordered the destruction of the gold mines, which he saw as the only British objectives, but this action was blocked by a local judge. Smuts raised an army of 500 men as quickly as he could, and demanded the banks be emptied and their reserves be placed on a train for Machadodorp. The train carrying Smuts, his soldiers, and all the Transvaal's gold was the last to leave Pretoria before the town fell, only hours later, to the British Army."

Paul Kruger made regular requisitions for gold from the mint and directly from the gold mines during the last few months before he fled to Switzerland. very few of those ‘burgers’ as you call them got paid. they were starved to death. the mercenaries were gone by then. To avoid capture by the british. what happened to all that gold? with all the inflation since then it is billions by now, not millions.

Interesting Guzman, but the argument here is about something that happened at another time.

GUZMAN1: It was another gold? I forgot that you have a lot of it!
hi guzman, the gold I'm talking about probably went missing when kruger fled the country in 1900. ostensibly to raise help. he did go to germany but the kaiser refused to see him. he never came back.
when lord milner took posession of the mint about 2 million pounds worth of gold was missing plus a undisclosed amount in minted kruger pounds and brittish currency. not to mention moneys recorded as paid out that was never paid out.
Hundred thousands of Africaaners have worshipped Kruger as their National hero against the Brits. The time has come to learn he was an embezzler and a common thief.
Do you see what you have done? I asked you very nicely to leave this topic for a few weeks. There are things underfoot that you will not understand now. This is not the way to treat your friend, even if you are upset with me.

i have done nothing my friend. you are biased in this matter. trying to protect your family. at some time the truth must come out. it is no disgrace to you if the grandfather of your grandfather looted his own people.
