I see communication as most productive, useful and fun when its interactive.
My choice would be to interact with participants of a thread, or poll I have created, but I appreciate that people gain different things from choosing a different level of interaction.
Mr. Rick - sorry, I am a Libra, I do weigh things like the symbol of my sign - the scales, ha. I've gotten better about it. Maybe there is no wrong answer to this question.

doberman3: Sorry, but wanted to say hello to some of my old friends that have posted on this poll.
Ok, it's out of my system.
I will say, Mr. Rick, it is a good question actually. A poll is different from a thread. As you can see, I think 2 different ways about this.
The Dobe
On the blogs usually the blogger will participate, it is considered good manners, but not always, some bloggers use the option of allowing no replies at all. Thus they can make a statement which you cannot reply to.
But on the threads all can reply, if the OP does not comment he is really allowing everyone's statements to go unchallenged. Thus leaving the general consensus of opinion to be decided by other participants without his/her opinion.

jac379: Maybe the birds have some motive, such as observing how you react, or what cleaning products you use, without interaction/interference and therefore influencing the outcome?
Perhaps, but I do prefer that birds drop their bombs on the ground...this way, I can avoid the use of cleaning products and familiarize myself with the species.

jac379: Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
I can only give my view, but it rather depends on the the motives of the OP. If they are trying to provoke a discussion with the aim of clarifying something in their own mind, I think participation is good. If they are just looking for the general opinion, then just taking the poll results is the answer.

From a scientific methodology point of view, the aim of research would be to observe, or measure a phenomenon without influencing the outcome.
To influence the outcome would possibly fall under the category of scientific fraud.
To answer the OP's question, participant's expectations are somewhat irrelevant to the aim of the poll, except perhaps that they may stop participating if their is no motive for them to do so.
