Absolutely not. I had surgery and woke up in the middle of it. It was the most frightening thing I've every been through. The anesthesiologist said he had to wake me up because my blood pressure was going up while I was under anesthesia. When I woke up I heard the saw running that was about to cut the bone in my big toe. There are some surgeries that people like to watch on the monitor but if the surgery involves saws, it's best to stay asleep help

No, I did that and it hurt so much I nearly didn't survive it.

It was a very interesting experience, just not something I'd choose to do.

galrads: besides the ice cream scoop in the lobotomy, the only thing that bothered me during any of those procedures was the catheters. They felt and like garden hose was in me.

Ouch.

It would depend on the surgery and if I was needed in the process in being conscious. I have underwent Surgery both minor and major both and both more than a few times. I can remember a very bad accident that took me down hard and I was being rushed to the hospital to have my leg sewn up and make sure that there was not too much permanent damage to the knee. Luckily I kept the leg and the major arteries were missed in the accident. I answered a question incorrectly (told them it had made me itchy once) on the way and they would not give me any morphine for the pain till we got to the hospital. Quite frankly in that situation I would have been happy to of been unconscious.

I woke up when the Dr was stitching me up after having my appendix out. When the anesthesiologist realized I was awake he seemed upset and kept telling me to close my eyes as if that would put me under again. I wonder who he got to sit for him when he took his licensing exam.

I was also awake for each of the four c sections. I didn't want to miss out on the birth of my kids!

I was given the choice when I had laser surgery done on my neck. I chose to be under. When I woke up I was in a seated position with all the attending docs/nurses/techs standing in front of me and they said, okay, go ahead and stand up, just after I did so, I felt the tell tale signs of vomit coming on, the sweatiness, the heat, the watery mouth - so I said: I'm going to puke, and just after I said that the vomit rushed up and tossed out right towards them as they were backing away... that was pretty cool and they thanked me for warning them... dancing so yah, I prefer that over the other potentially gruesome reality. yay

There are some things I prefer to see, and some things I prefer not to see. I doubt if I would want to watch a doctor cut me open for surgery.

I would, yes but I would ask the surgeon to charge less because I have seen how easy his job is.

They try, these days, to put you under for everthing, no matter how minor. If it can be done with a local, that is what I tell them to do.

You don't get to watch it - they screen off the bit you're not supposed to see, unless its very minor surgery and then I think you can watch you're ingrown toenail being sorted.

I had minor major surgery for a minor facial growth, the worst part was waiting for the biopsy report from the lab, fortunately it was non malignant. The surgeon commented I was bleeding too much and when he called for the nurses assistance it turned out she had gone for a cup of tea, which I was most pissed off about. However he stopped the bleeder and now I haven't even got a scar visible enough to show off.

I have been awake for a few surgeries and asleep for a few. It can depend on if you have a choice or not. And
after hearing about some people in the news that took advantage of others while they were unconscious, dentists, surgeons, doctors, I don't think I would let them put me to sleep during any more.
