the same can be asked of modern art... I remember an interview with a famous modern artist. It was discovered that he did not paint any of his own works that were selling for squillions of dollars. When asked if he was conning the art world, he replied, "modern art is a con anyway".
So is rap really music? It is like modern art..... but people buy it...

I don't like it but it is music or possibly poetry set to music. I don't think there is a set definition for what music is. The same thing has been said down the years about everything from Rock & Roll to Punk Rock.
In his day Johann Strauss Junior was seen in his day the same way as he was trying to bring music to the masses as opposed to the aristocracy and the academics. He would have been seen as somewhat common and unsophisticated in his approach.
