Since most other jobs require experience should the U.S. Presidency require that to be the commander of the military you need to have military experience. Or if a president is elected who does not have this experience should he have a military commander and chief who makes the decisions he is unqualified to make.

I think he should...after all he's in charge of the military. To me that's like being chief of staff in a hospital but never been a doctor...being a football coach but never played football...being a preacher but never attended church...being a school teacher but never been to school. Etc.

And he should set an example for the rest of the nation by having his children serve also.

It probably could be beneficial if a President has served in our Military for some, but I think it is unnecessary.

Not unlike, on the "Planet of the Apes", We have a principal in our constitution where we will always have "Civilian Control" of the military. We have a cumbersome constitutional division of powers between the President who is the Commander in Chief, and our Congress has the power to raise armies, maintain a navy, and wage wars.

For instance, President Truman, who didn't have a college education, relieved popular General MacArthur, who, at the time, was in charge of NATO forces waging war in Korea, because he failed to respect the authority of the President.

Truman told McArthur he didn't care what he thought of Harry Truman, but that MacArthur would respect his commander-in-chief of the USA. MacArthur tried going around Truman with Congress and wanted to nuke China starting WWIII instead of keeping with the Presidents policy to keep the present conflict in Korea.

Jimmy Carter, who served in the United States Navy as a Communications Officer, Sonar Officer, Electronics Officer, Weapons Officer, and Supply Officer while on board USS Pomfret (SS-391).

Jimmy Carter, future President of the United States (1977–1981), served aboard Pomfret from 17 December 1948 to 1 February 1951, and is the only U.S. president to have "qualified in submarines."

No!!!

There's entirely too much military influence in the government already.

Personally I think former military officers should be banned from holding any sort of political office.

Does a leader have to be versed in the art of killing people? On principle I don't see why this has to be an essential.

Although, I do predict a Nationalist/military coup against the collapsing Liberal state when the debt/moral bubble bursts and millions upon millions are left either bankrupted or starving whilst the minorites, which have long been kept silent through welfare payments, turn into snakes when the host can't pay any more charity out and the civilised and productive men desperately turn to a charismatic strongman from the far-right to restore order to the chaos. These coups will be something I'll support through lack of a better alternative.

Everytime I see a topic like this it makes me want to weep. I can only think of two words. Bill Clinton. Sadly the job of president here has turned into a puppets job. So it really does not matter what their experiance is else where. sigh---- IMAGE REMOVED because photobucket.com no longer allows embedded images ----

That's right.

And the powers that put both politicians and generals into office are not the voting public, but the controlling elite of financiers and bankers. Everything else is just for show.

Are you suggesting that the military are about preserving constitutional rights.

Remember Oliver North? Golden boy of the military?

Remember the guy from the joint chiefs of staff who essentially told Congress that they had nothing to say about the US involvement in Libya?

The military are all about force.
Not diplomacy, not consensus, not democracy.

The founding fathers didn't even want a standing military at all, just state militias that could be mobilized if the need arose.

You can bet they didn't want any sort of military government.

If Lyndon Johnson had been a military man he might not have ordered a cover upon when Israel attacked USS Liberty;

"A private commission investigating the 1967 attack on the U.S. spy ship USS Liberty released the sworn testimony of one naval investigator that the Israelis knew the ship was American and intended to "murder its entire crew."

Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967, killing 34 U.S. sailors and injuring 172 others in one of the deadliest attacks suffered by a U.S. ship that remained afloat.

The private commission headed by a former chief of naval operations, retired Adm. Thomas H. Moorer, made public an affidavit by retired Capt. Ward Boston, formerly of the judge advocate general's office and one of two senior naval officials investigating the attack.

"The evidence was clear. Both Admiral (Isaac) Kidd and I believed with certainty that this attack, which killed 34 America sailors and injured 172 others, was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew. I am certain that the Israeli pilots that undertook the attack as well as their superiors who had ordered the attack, were aware the ship was American."

a

If a professional experience in all things that the state do would be required, the president would then need to have professional experience in all aspects of state businesses to lead the state, which would not be possible.

Malarkey!
You need to do some more Research on this!
Much more!
Too many of the Sailor's Testimonies are inconsistent with what they really would have been able to see from their positions!
They couldn't have seen what they claimed to have seen from their stations!laugh

There's already too much emphasis on military in the US political paradigm. A Prez with a military background doesn't add anything new or unique to the WH.

It would be amazing if future Presidents came with a track record of success in philanthropy, education, or medical fields instead of law or military.
