How many computers have you bought in your life? It seems no matter how well you take care of your computer, eventually it will stop working & sometimes due to the age or for other reasons, it's more sensible to buy a new one than to pay lots of money to have it repaired.
Dozens. I used to spend a fortune on my own customized High Performance PC's and run home servers and do all sorts, overclocking, Distibuted Computer etc.

The I got sense.
My first computer lasted for 9 years & a few months ago, it just wouldn't start up after pushing button (laptop, Dell). The computer repairman said he would have to take it apart to find the problem & it would be probably be costly, so I should spend that money towards a new one. I bought another laptop, Dell.

Up until recently I still had a working 1996 I think Packard Bell with a 486DX2 75MH Processor and a massive 8megabyte of RAM. And a 500megabyte hard drive. My first computer. I told my guardians 'it'll help with homework honestly'
It helped me swapping 1.44 floppy disks of naked women with my school friends and playing games.

Sounds like you know how to repair computers or troubleshoot them. How many times did you have to take your computer to the repairman? Yours lasted a long time.

Never took them to repair man. I build then myself out of parts. That old one I mentioned was just hanging around. Even today I'll skip/tip jump a couple of dells at the recycling place. Fix them up and sell them. It's amazing the information that's left on them. Last 2 I got were from a school back home. Payroll records.... kids details, parents phone numbers....
I have had this one 5 yrs. In no way did i intend to have one,but a Spanish friend upgraded hers and went on and on for me to have this,so i did. It doesnt get used much, nothing stored on it,but in the last week it has started to "crash" a couple of times a day. When it goes "bang" i will not bother getting another one.
menu11: Thank God I don't have to buy computers if I needed one, because I fix them myself.
During the 9 years that my laptop was operating, I only had to have it repaired twice. Once, the bulb burned out, causing black screen & the other time I couldn't sign into operating system. Repairman said he didn't know what happened, but repaired it. I feel I did really well, because it was my first computer & I had just learned the internet.

What will you use to access here on Connecting Singles if your computer goes "bang"?
I wont access it.To be honest,i dont have a need for a computer,i never do anything with it apart from, maybe read the news, and now have a dabble on this site. I dont recieve e-mails,not interested in photos ect. It has taught me a basic knowledge of computers though so i dont feel to much of a dinosaur!

I still have my old one...I was really disappointed when it stopped working, had gotten attached to it I think. Seems the school should know how to erase the hard drive before donating to the recycling.
popey: maddog you could probably get a job with the NSA
I know we have laws... very strict laws on data protection... but even still, a few years back a few boxes we pulled out of a skip outside a solicitors office... lol had Scanned copies of title deeds, Case details... client portfolios... ... madness.
Those same school PC's one of them I figured out was owned by one of the employees husbands while he was working for the Government, road building contracts etc. All the plans, confidential correspondence between Contractors.. costings etc... his own CV< Address, day he got married... pics of his own house, holidays etc. ... it goes on and on.

popey: in the past thirteen years I've had six computers and steel don't no how to use the darn things
A person can get by using a computer for just basic searching, accessing sites, email, instant messaging, printing & still not understand why or how everything works.
I've never had to buy any nor have any fixed. My late husband had his own computer business and sold Dell computers.
When the guy I'm now with moved in together he already had a computer and he knew how to repair them. This last time we both went half on a new Dell computer.I also knew before hand on how to repair them as well cause I learned how to from watching my late husband.
Depending on the age of the computer and what's wrong with them sometimes it can be cheaper to purchase another one.

Yes, that what I decided to do. Got another Dell laptop with Windows 8 os. I had used only Windows XP before. Seems Microsoft is regressing in their os, not improving at all.
You are so fortunate to know how to do your own troubleshooting & repairs.
I owned my first Apple -- bought in 1996 -- for 13 years before the floppy drive crashed. I would have fixed it myself, but never could get hold of another floppy drive.
I owned my 2nd Apple for 2 years before I accidentally dropped it. Now it's half blue-screen, which I hope to get fixed soon. Now I have a Mac mini.
Since I'm a writer, all I use them for is as a glorified word processor; plus, I use Google to do research.
So, only 3 MACs in 17 years. They are VERY dependable & worth the price!

Usually when that happens the administrative gets scrambled to where you can’t sign in to operating system, and has to be reset. I have System Mechanics installed in my Inspriron 15 Dell laptop 7-in-1 media card reader. 6 yr. old Dell and have had no problems. I had a Mac computer back in early 90’s when printers were dot metric with 4” floppy disks. The only thing I didn’t like was putting command.exe to execute programs. What a pain in the butt.
I had an IBM that I received as a gift and it was 9 years old when it stopped working one day. It was a very solid machine. I still have not thrown it out because there is a cost to erase the hard drive and may be I am still hoping that it can be repaired. The repairman said it was a motherboard that was gone and that it would be expensive to repair it and it may not last. I bought Asus Zenbook instead which is ok-yish. It would not wake up from the sleep sometimes and also occasionally would show me black screen at start up. Don't know what to do, may be I should send it for repair to Asus service centre.

I`m on my second computer in two and a half years. The first one lasted about five months. It was so obsolete that I could smoke an entire cigarette during the time it took to go to whatever site I had clicked on to view. This one I`m using now has just had a complete recovery done and I suspect my hard drive may need replacing.
I bought this Dell All-In-One a year ago and had one thing after another wrong with it.
It was under warranty but when that ran out I bought a software protection plan and now I can call Dell (India) anytime, as many times as I want and am not charged for it.
The thing I don't like is when I'm on the phone will Dell it's anywhere from 2 to 3 hours for them to troubleshoot the problem.
And when they fix it, their "fix" affects something else but I don't know about it right away so then I'm on the phone again with them the next day.
I wouldn't buy this computer again. It's not compatible with the CS site as the screen often freezes.

Bought one, sold dozens. One man's treasure is the another man's junk or something.
