Why should half of one nation live in Republic when other half lives under Kingdom and be part of an Empire? If I was Irish I d vote for 1 nation 1 republic. But i ,m not Irish and dont know whats the case .I m curious. Do Irish people want to be united? What people of Republic think about getting united and what N.Ireland people want? And economically what would be best for both part? Do u see they ever get united?
Nope. I'd rather the UK tax payer fund Northern Ireland on it's own loss making initiatives. It bleeds London like an open wound.
Here's a fun fact. Most English people want rid of Northern Ireland, but most people in NI (including self proclaimed Irish people in NI) want to stay in the Union. And you can see why. Money! And I'm very happy about that.

u mean living standarts is is better in the kingdom than in the rep?
Leo_7: u mean living standarts is is better in the kingdom than in the rep?
No. It costs the British Taxpayer a fortune for Public budget for it's possessions. Scotland, NI etc. If NI was part of the Rep tomorrow, it would cost ME more.

Obstinance_Works: NI's Catholics want to stay in the Union more than the English want them to. The Northern Irish know which side their bread is buttered(unlike those mangy and ungrateful Scots).
Northern Ireland is more developed than the south
Developed? IN what way? Within the last ten years our infrastructure has caught up and surpassed the North. Our life expectancy is also greater in the South than in the North, in both genders. London really needs to spend more money on that.
Obstinance_Works: Personally, I'm for unity of Ireland. I cannot favour Britain for the British without favouring Ireland for the Irish.
The Republic is for the Irish. The North is for the British. Unionism is dead politics, but Northern Ireland's warped version of Democracy suits everyone involved. Even the ones that were at war with themselves in the past have come together and realised very quickly that the status quo is in their best interest to milk the cash cow.

All the respondents above have focused their discussion on the economies and in turn Ireland and the UK. We're part of Europe now! As you can see with Ireland, Greece, Portugal etc. the EU will take some responsibility for the economic well being of a nation. For me, this rules out Madogs argument.

It rules nothing out. When stuff needs to be paid for in NI.... for example a second Bus Stop because the belligerents won't use just one for the same bus.... British Tax payers for that.
Adalstef: I couldnt imagine a part of Iceland being owned by another country. We would never settle for that.
Its different here, half of them in NI regard themselves as British and would never agree to getting rid of the border.
Personally i think if we fought on 90 years ago and even if it turned to civil war it would have at least been settled but too much time has passed since.
we're broke here in the South anyway so even if NI wanted to join us we couldnt afford them

It is not half of the nation. The N.Ireland is made up from 6 counties, Province of Ulster. In fact there are 9 counties of Ulster, but 3 counties are the part of the Irish Rep.
Once you visit Northen Ireland ( I was in Belfast and Derry )and than you visit Ireland, you understand that similar threads are useless. Even they behave and talk different. They think different. N. Ireland are British. Ireland are Irish. That is okay. Diversity is fine.
Anyway, why not to ask all Irish population in NY or in Australia, if they want to unified? Irish are elswhere in English speaking countries. They have always migrated the most.

All land's united are a union, when the land's have a need to united they should. United they are one and one is more than the many, at the time of need.
fleurdelis16: Even they behave and talk different. They think different..
That's not true. They talk differently as people in Cork speak differently from me. Or people born in Dublin speak differently from me. Accents. Their behaviour is similar also.
Many people in the South have relations either side of the border as I do. We are very homogeneous.

okay I do not understand English spoken in Belfast. I understand English spoken in Dublin perfectly. I was not able to enjoy Belfast because people there were cold fish and posh to me, I enjoyed Dublin because people were absolutely great and jovial to me. I paid by pounds in Belfast - all was too expensive and I had to change my EURO´s into pounds. I could bring my national EUROs to Dublin and spend them with pleasure....

well, looks like Rep people dont like NI people at all. I cant understan why Rep people so much worrying about economy that will get worse?if they had united then they would have 1 economy and work and share the expences together.why Reps think NI just would eat and sleep and suck their money?
Leo_7: why Reps think NI just would eat and sleep and suck their money?
Because the security situation there, Leo demands a heavily funded Police and until very recently a sizeable Army. Also as part of the Peace Process, there are lots of money to be spent on Community Officers telling kids not to be violent. And a bunch of other stuff. NI is heavily subsidized.

but why?r NI people dangerous?cannot they live in peace with their own nation? If Ireland get united what will make people fight to each other and why so much security will be needed. And if the security is the only reason ,u think state have no enough funds to establish the peace inside the country?

lol? There has never been 100% peace in this country while an external power deemed it more useful for it's own interests to sow discord. So that's been about 7 centuries. Although in fairness, nowadays things are better. No... most of the people in NI by the principle of self determination do not want to join the South either.
