They are not disconnected thought patterns. Both are needed. One is not one or the other. Concluding that linear thinking can only result in one possible correct answer shows lack of thought and imagination or shows prejudice. Neighter is it thought's purpose to find an answer, finding the right questions can be more rewarding.

I guess I am a divergent thinker. For work I have taken several test or quizzes depends who is testing you on what they call it After one test the psychologist looked at me and said you are the type of person that does not have one back up plan but several and they come to you fast. He was correct. So the quizzes do help find out stuff on us.
I am historically a linear (logical) thinker as it is mostly required in my job though I was lucky to recognise this after reading Edward De Bono's book "I am right, you are wrong". Beyond that point I was more aware about developing my lateral (divergent) thought processes and capability and now am pretty good at both approaches depending on the requirements of the situation.
There are not many books on the market about styles of thought and critical thinking but it is worth reading some if you can find them.

I'm a divergent thinker, I think. I sometimes drive myself crazy, can't stop thinking!

Depends on the situation.
If im thinking about something economic or sciencey, or my life's mission or been caught in the wrong neighbourhood at the wrong hour then I'm linear in thinking. Only the soundest option will do. And there's no room for listlessness.
If it's art or music or dating women then it's all about fanciful frolics of imagination and a general meandering approach to thought.

I've taken the Myers-Briggs (MBTI) twice for employers. I found it interesting enough, I suppose, and both employers made it a "fun" group effort. However, I personally don't put much stock in it, as our 'type' can and does change and evolve depending on our specific emotional and cognitive climates. I also don't care for systems that are trying to pigeon-hole me. I won't go, I won't go, I won't go!

both, depends on the problems and the situation...different problem requires different solution... and sometimes the situation doesn't support the problem...
and I don't make conclusion based on rumours, gossips or the clique... because the clique can take advantage from me and told otherwise (lies) to support their agendas...
