I have had people online be extremely rude and thought to myself that they are doing so because there are few consequences for having what I call keyboard courage.

I agree with you and sometimes people get totally ignored in the forums for whatever reason and this can be perceived as being rude as well. cheers

I agree with the 'keyboard courage'. I think some people online are rude just for the fun of it.

@2Intrigued::wave:
I have to admit that I am guilty of ignoring people, but it's not intentional. Sometimes when I'm online I get distracted by the phone, or I'm cooking, or cleaning, etc. So I forget to reply.
As you probably have noticed, I try not to get into the debates because I'm not a good debater, instead, I'm a thread starter.

Hiya Lala wave You do a fine job of responding to people in your threads. I try to stay out of controversial threads for the same reasons as you state. Besides, they usually end up in arguments and a few hurt feelings. teddybear

People can be really mean online, especially when they are anonymous.

I’d say the level on the forum is quite ok right now. Keep up the work people! thumbs up

A year or so back, we had a hostile person on the forum; as I felt it, he attacked most of the posters and also enjoyed banning other CS members from his threads!

I haven't either until I want to reply to you. I noticed it the other night too. Very strange. Maybe we should let CS know that?

When I encounter trolls online, they tend to get annoying but I try not to engage the best I could. In person however I also tend to not get engage but when I feel that it's too much after doing so, I step up to their level or crazy. I start ranting about things like the new world order, UFOs and cattle mutilations and the illuminati. They get freaked out and shut up after that. It's pretty hilarious.

jac How could I be afraid of someone I have never met?

I simply asked you once why you always had to put a far left feminist spin on everything.

I am rude in person too. I take pride in it. I have been to court about it a few times. Like I told the judge last time, if he didn't want the punch, he shoulda kept his mouth shut. [The judge agreed. Macht Nichts.] Yeah I see a lot of keystroke courage here. A long time ago I ran a BBS in DC, (this was back in the Vic20 C64 PC Clone Fidonet days) when you signed up, you had to meet with me and show your DL and the info had to agree with what you put in your profile. Out of towners had to provide a voice # and a mailing address and respond to a physical mail for verification. I saw some keystroke courage in our forums, but not nearly as much (or as many asinine comments) as I see with log on and create a profile with no verification or identity check.

All that being said, if I respond to a post on page 1 or 2 of a forum thread and you respond to me, but meanwhile I have logged off. When I next check out that thread, if it has climbed to 14 pages, no, I am not going to read the pages written while I was off-line. I just jump to last page and pick up there. So if I didn't respond to you, well I probably simply didn't see your writing.

Yes, I call them Keyboard Warriors.

But to some degree, I understand that the way they present themselves online is an anonymous outlet, as they have the safety of being online, and may also lack social interaction skills.

A most amazing thing though...before I discovered CS, I was on a local chat site. There was a man in particular that was so angry. He would take every opportunity to become super offended, strike out with angry words, try to insult others' intelligence implying he was far superior to them and we were just mere specks of dust....I think we all know the M.O. The fun many of us enjoyed by unwinding and simply chatting and laughing was ruined by this one angry blackhole of a person.

He disappeared for some months and then he returned. He began by offering an apology for his behavior and promising he was going to apologize to everyone privately. Many of us thought it was simply a joke. How can someone that angry and self absorbed change?

Well he did change. And he was sincere. He somehow came to an understanding that his behavior and attitude was destructive and what was pushing people away from him. He became one of my dearest oline friends. wine

You've reminded me of a chap here who would have angry outbursts, ususally directed at one woman in particular. He never actually admitted to fancying the pants off of her, but when I suggested publicly to her that this was the case and for her not to get upset about his outbursts, you could just see the poor fella squirming away with some internal battle, desperately trying to control and resolve some deep seated issues of hurt he had.

He was/is a genuinely lovely bloke. Sometimes people just need to work through some stuff and its a measure of ourselves to allow people to do that, to give them the space they need to heal and move on. Its not easy to do, as hostility breeds hostility, but it is possible.

People are even more rude online cause they feel comfortable about being so.Besides hiding behind a computer.

There aren't too many people who have been rude to me who have ever gotten away with it cause I've been known to throw a pretty good punch.Sometimes I've had no choice.Walking away didn't always make them stop.laugh

Just for clarification...I'm not referring to people who reply much later or don't reply because they're preoccupied with something or someone else. It's the one's who purposely skip your comment and will respond to someone who has just posted a comment after you did. wine

That happens to often, and many of the comments that are ignored are relevant. It just becomes a thread involving the same people, going back and forth.

@Reb56 I don't mind you quoting me, but adding words or changing text inside the quote is not considered a cool thing to do. I made no mention of fighting words, but yes that was the basis of the judge's decision, even though the complainant had thought a physical response in the form of a fast fist to a poor choice of words by him was 'rude.' :)
