The late Russel Means said he likes the term American Indians since the word Indian derives from the Latin word for God.

Now my Latin is a tad rusty but I think the Latin word for God is Deus.

This is what I found out about most is sovereign nation in the case of the Lakotas.

That one is easy…usually neither! ‘Indian’ may be the way most Indian’s describe themselves, and often each other, but actually the description harks back to when a disorientated Columbus thought he had reached India, and therefore called native people ‘Indians’. Native American is a term that is undermined when some Americans point out that they were born here and therefore are also native to America. Actually the best way to go is to specify the nation. For example, if you are English, you prefer that description to someone calling you European, and you're unlikely to want to be called French, or German. So it goes with indigenous people – the Lakota nation is sovereign and totally separate to the Cheyennes, who are also sovereign and not the same as the Hopis – which is another sovereign nation who prefer not to be confused with Kiowas…and so forth…

Having Native ancestry I would prefer someone call me by my first name and not worry about what tribe I decend from or where my ancestry are from.

I still see them as human beings regardless of what the poll question is.

Occasionally, I will visit a nearby reserve inhabited by many aboriginal tribes...they truly enjoy being called by their first names. wine

Thats right.Be proud of ones heritage, but in day to day life, there history isnt important.
If we started that,we would,to be "PC", call the rest of the Americans "Immigrant americans".laugh
Now that would be daft,as thats history.

Surely, it would depend upon the individual?

Ccincy mentioned earlier about prefering to be indentified by nation. I was born in England, but don't consider myself particularly English. Its only a part of who I am.

I would say I'm reasonably European, having many cultural influences.

First and foremost, however, I'm Jac.

First Nation, of all tribes of this land that is no longer theirs.
The people of these lands gave us the knowledge of keeping it and it was disregarded.
Suffer the descendants of the invaders because they could not see what was given to them.

The Lakota people were given a name by a winkte´ at birth & they never told that name to anyone because they thought if a person knew their real name they had power over them. So, they might be offended if you called them by their birth name, or even if you asked them what it was.
The question inferred, "What do they like to be called as a PEOPLE, or ethnic group, not as an individual."

I think you have a legitimate question despite some of the rather negative responses.
