The fact that he/she was an athiest would be a bonus, but it really comes down to whether they were a bigger or lesser piece of filth than the Christian candidate(s).
Religion should have nothing to do with politics, and vice versa, although they do seem to ooze together, making the whole works a slimy mess.

I would much sooner vote for a candidate honest enough to admit that he/she is an atheist, than any of your current ones who pretend to be Christians just to appease the religious nutters. (I.e. most Americans)

.... I totally agree.
And as Atheism increases watch out for the politicians that switch allegiance.
A leader - President should be voted for by his vision for the country and his ability to leader the country into an improved tomorrow - not on his religious affiliations - at least in America.
It was not so long ago that during Kennedy's election as President that the USA had never had a catholic President before and it was a shocker for the nation.....
Luckily in America there is a belief in the separation of church and state.

I have no idea what my presidents believes are, and I really dont care He is probably registered Christian protestant like most of us, he is married to a jewish woman, other then that I dont know
I don't really see much difference with the direction this country is heading toward. Bush claimed he was a Christian, yet he sent thousands of our troops overseas to be killed what about the innocent civilians in those countries that were killed then you have President Obama who's a Baptist with the Baptists, then he's a Muslim for the Muslims, if they can't make up their mind or not live it they should not profess it

Religions are riddled with wars. I am not religious but have read enough to know that. So actually he seemed to be behaving just like a Christian.
Yes I would vote for an atheist. I try to narrow it down to whom I think will do the less damage to the country. Gone are the days of the politician that really seeks to serve the people. That cares about anything but an ego trip. And hello to the days of its all about me politicians.
