Why many heroes don't see themselves as heroes and if heroes are not THEM then WHO is a hero...ya know? Not that they are all employed in any particular field. Heroes have a variety of jobs and some are homeless.
Also, why the heck do some make the other- or at least themselves- look uncaring by saying "I was JUST DOING MY JOB."
My long question above was cut off..oh brother! Basically the question: Why do you think first responders who save someone many times say, "I was JUST doing my job." Like that is ALL it is about.

They say that because they didn't take the job to be a hero.
Firemen want to save lives. That is the job of a fireman
EMT personnel want to save lives. If they wanted to be heroes they would be bragging all day that they saved a life and are a hero
People who take jobs to service the public do if for the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) of the job.
Men and women in the military, particularly the infantry, don't think of themselves as heroes until a senator or president says they are.
When the fire horn blows, the last thing on their mind is....I'm gonna be a hero today.
All these people are proud of what they do in their jobs.
CuddlingSoul: I saved a life once and was given praise for it, then I had an overwhelming feeling of modesty and humility instead of pride. I don't know why.

Maybe it didn't take risk? SO... you felt humble? I seen a comment in a hero museum made by a cop during 9/11 and he said he was ONLY doing his job. Cripes...I would say anything but that. "I had a lot of dust in my eyes" or something to get off the subject if I didn't want to discuss it.People in certain religions - COULD, I suppose think that any accepting any extra attention to themselves is not good.

Maybe...IF they see it that way. I feel it is not in the choice. You are a hero if by LUCK are there. Could be a person at a beach and help a stranger drowning just because you feel for them or their family. To me...that person would be a hero just because of the comibination of that chance happening to be THERE and also because they are the type who would do most of what they could to help depending on situation. To me that makes a hero. Even if they don't care...and just do it do to jobs though-the cat itself is that of heroism. To save from injury or pain or death.
