The fact I'm self employed when someone takes something that does not belong to them it is called stealing. When buying tools of the trade I buy in bulk so I know, I own it. When they go missing, do I confront them or steal them back? If you did not buy it, it is not yours. If you find it, it belongs to someone else. If you keep it, you have stole it and that makes you a theft.

True. People have told me reporting that stuff is none of MY business if I am not a manager but I tell them that is irrelevant because how would many even know without others seeing or hearing things being spoken about in ways? Ya know? And some companies IF can afford have used PIs is enough is taken (or cams) which I don't blame them for. It all adds up sometimes, besides. I also seen people rip off employers by taking excess breaks once bosses were out to meetings.
StandardsFirst: Poll on:Stealing even small amounts at work. What is integrity to you? And aren't some things everyones responsibility?
Don't sweat the small stuff...who appointed you the guardian of others. It's best to live your life in a manner that you find comfortable and acceptable but don't hold others to that same high ground. If you do you are in for a lifetime of disappointment as those around you are human and capable of some very foolish things. If you were hired in that capacity then that's another thing. By ratting out your fellow workers your bosses would view you as someone to watch out for as they themselves aren't perfect. I know it doesn't sit well with you but by bring light to the situation you may do yourself more harm than good. jmho

Its never occurred to me to take something from work, but integrity seems a one way street very often.
If I think of some labour which people do for minimum wage, or less, I think there are some big elements of theft there.
Maybe, sometimes people feel the need to nick a couple of pencils to redress the balance, maybe not materially, so much as psychologically in terms of power and control.
By reporting, a person would be redressing their power and control balance in some way.
If there were no power and control imbalances, then maybe we wouldn't get these chains and cycles of behaviour to the same degree.

Not relevant to say they THEMSELVES aren't perfect when most don't do crimes. This one wouldn't be as bad though. I would wait a bit just to see if had a bad memory and took by accident though. If they looked around a lot and slipped stuff in pockets or spoke of how they didn't get paid enough (as some HAVE in past I would report). To look like I wasn't looking to get extra attention or a promotion I would say to watch out for certain things at certain times and not say who right away or else wait till I was ready to find another job or already quit or many times I wasn't at my dream place and made it clear to people I would not take a promotion IF they wondered because I was looking elsewhere. I live for integrity. I figure IF anything we should find something in life to improve instead of being here to just make money and have fun.Of course there are MANY things we can do like recycle etc.

Theft in the workplace is extremely common, and companies apparently lose a lot of money as a result. However, based on this post of yours I think I would not relish having a work colleague like you. It is not your business to snoop and report your colleagues.

usually doesn't take snooping/prying/spying on. Just looking around casually sometimes like normally would. Many people talk openly around other colleagues assuming they all hate the boss. DUMB. They are more fair in most ways I have found then the co-workers who also USUALLY seem lazier except when bosses are around. I studied criminal justice and have a love for JUSTICE though. I realize pencils are not a huge deal but I would look at it as doing a favor for a person and place. COULD even lead to hurting a company which in turn lays everyone off or fails if ENOUGH tiny things were taken.
I look at reporting things a saving someone time so they can have those around they PREFER...IF that is what they would like. Even if it isn't about a theft, but lets say I was SURE my friend was being cheated on because I seen her husband and someone getting realm affectionate (so wasn't based ONLY on gossip), AND also I KNEW she definitely didn't support an open marriage situation where the wife doesn't care about cheating...THEN I would tell her. I suppose she might think I was lying but I would say "Hire PIs for a day or two. You deserve better. He deserves the type who cheat and don't stick with commitments."
Quite often it is usually a reasonably honest person that will steal a pencil of two. Perhaps it gives them a bit or a rush or guilty pleasure that they do not often get in their normal(honest) lifestyle. Anyone who continually steals though is not any different that someone who would take the whole box of pencils in a single grab. That being said, this type of theft is very common and truly is a major issue in the workplace. JMO.
theft is theft......I,d respect someone more if they asked to have them....for who knows....today your pencils....tomorrow your wallet..............?????...if I saw it ...not my problem....but don't exspect my friendship.....jmo.

Well you are talking about something completely different here. I don't particularly like your attempt at emphasis by using capital letters randomly so I stand by my previous post. You seem rather bitter in my opinion and maybe you have good reason, I don't know.

Ccincy: Yes some things are everyones responsibility.
Stealing is wrong regardless of how big the item and how often one steals. It would be wrong for me not to say something if I were to see someone steal.Would a child be treated any different if they were caught stealing something?
Would I say anything about the stealing, perhaps not.
I use to work at a sandwich shop, and even something small like a bag of chips or a small cup (excluding water cups) has to be charged if they want it. I watch all customers and if I see them attempting to take something I automatically confront them. I'm a nice person, so I won't just go and call the cops but deal with them myself. If someone comes in with no money and is really in dyer need of something, not just someone coming in with a 5 minute story I will do an exception and pay for it for them.

agree with you janie...and small things like a pen well people pick those up all the time by accident
I'm more bothered about people that don't pull their weight, and people that are off all the time because they've got a headache or womens' problems. Firstly because this is a more costly theft than stealing pencils and secondly because it is a theft that impacts upon the entire workforce.
