I did read that after WW2 Canada had the third largest military training pilots in the world - that was because of the Agreement between the UK and Canada - called the "plan or the scheme" - to building and train pilots in Canada - without having to worry about being bombed by the enemy
and when you ask about most powerful military - are you talking about #s and strength? - once the atom bomb was developed and other advanced devices designed to make the human species extinct.... well that is sorta a power.

The British navy was extraordinary and one of the strongest before WW2

Germany! That is obvious. They could only be defeated by a group of allies fighting together. Not one of those allies could have defeated Germany on their own.
Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions claiming a total of 2,000 targets destroyed; including 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery pieces, 70 landing craft, nine aircraft, 4 armored trains, several bridges, a destroyer, two cruisers, and the Soviet battleship Marat
According to his autobiography, on one occasion, after trying a landing to rescue two downed novice Stuka crewmen and then not being able to take off again due to the muddy conditions, he and his three companions, while being chased for 6 km by Soviet soldiers, made their way down a steep cliff by sliding down trees, then swam 600 meters across the icy Dniester river, during which his rear gunner, Knight's Cross holder Hentschel, succumbed to the cold water and drowned. Several miles further towards the German lines, the three survivors were then captured by Soviets, but Rudel, knowing there was a bounty on his head,[citation needed] again made a run for it. Despite being barefoot and in soaking clothes, getting shot in his shoulder, and being hunted by several hundred pursuers with dog packs, he eventually managed to make his way back to his own lines

It wasn't really a secret...the world knew Germany was stock piling arms for years before the war. The French had a elevated view of their armed forces and security line. But in answer to the question it is Germany. Their army and weapons were way ahead of anybody else in Europe...the only thing that stopped them over running the UK was the English Channel.
