I see the government is making another attempt to change our drinking culture by bringing in a minimum price for alcohol. I personally don't think this will work. The only thing that can change our attitudes to alcohol is education from an early age. All minimum pricing will do is hit the low income people who like a drink.
the drink culture in Ireland to ingrained so deep that minimum priced drink will not stop it.
What needs to change is our whole attitude. I know my parents think nothing of offering visitors a glass of wine or indeed 2 or 3 glasses knowing full well that they are driving. Our scandinavian visitors cannot fathom how it is even considered let alone offered.
I know myself in my early 20's I used to drink til I staggered home barely coherent and never knowing at what point I'd gone from tipsy to drunk. Spending a fortune and not giving a damn. I then one day thought to myself....i wonder how much it takes to gets me drunk and it was a hell of a lot less that I'd thought and substantially less than I drank on a night out.
I do on the very rare occasion drink more than I should but i always end the night with my last few drinks being 7up or water. Usually since Im the one who makes sure everyone gets home safely.
Attitudes need to change big time when it comes to how much we drink. We may be very capable on our way out for a night but we need to take responsibility for how we get home and how we behave between then.

Totally agree.Pricing wont change the mindset and that is what needs changing.
I lived in Ireland while married to an Irishman. He STAYED drunk all the time! His brother was a recovering alcoholic. I think Eire should banish ALL alcohol, since the people can't seem to control themselves.
Changing the basic price of Alcohol won't make a blind bit of difference, 6.3 Billion was spent by the Irish on booze in 2012, and I doubt that will go downwards at all.
Changing the price of the consequences of alcohol might be a far better approach, 1000 Eur bill for A&E because you got plastered and passed out and have to have your stomach pumped, 100 EUR fine for littering because you puked up all over the street...etc, people will soon learn once they get charged for the consequences.
Even if minimum pricing is introduced, there is one place that probably won't be affected at all, the Dail Bar!!

Just my opinion...
Since when has prohibition ever worked and solved more problems than it has caused?

not one for stereotypes are you? Its a complete generalization to say all Irish people are drunks because we are not..we have the same levels of alcoholism and binge drinking as the uk has only they aren't stereotyped are they..Eastern European countries and Russia have the highest level of alcohol consumption
Increasing the price will make people think about their drinking but the urge to drink will outweigh the increased costs especially if its only a couple of euro..we have a binge drinking culture now..years ago it was men who drank every penny they had while their wives and children starved at home..I dont think that happens mush anymore

You just sound like a bitter ex wife. To say we should ban alcohol all together because you were stupid enough to marry an alcoholic is idiotic. About as idiotic as marrying an alcoholic I suppose.
