facetowardsfront: One of our own philosophers from 300 years ago who very much built on the ideas of Descartes was the Bishop of Cloyne, George Berkeley. He went on to have Universities named after him, such was his contribution to mathematics, physics and philosophy.

Berkley argued from a Solipsist perspective that our mind is the only reality and anything outside the mind does not exist. This is very much the same as Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and other eastern philosophies and Descartes "cogito ergo sum". The observer and the observed are both necessary for something to exist. But as a man of God, like the Eastern folk, he understood our mind is part of the Universal mind and therefore trees do exist and fall, whether we see them or not, because in the mind of God they do.

Strangely enough Berkley was from the same region of the country as Green Sleeves. I wonder is there a genetic link to this question? Or is it all in my mind?

tinyfangs: Descartes.. nailed animals on boards and cut them open alive, he somehow fails to gain my favour, no matter how he justified those actions

Sometimes the clear thinking of the psychopath is of use to us. I wouldn't want to be in a relationship with one but if I have to be operated on by a surgeon I would prefer a psychopath who is not going to waver from the job at hand. A dangerous animal they many be and worthy of our hatred but useful at times.

How can one hate which isn't what it is out of choice? Fear it, yes, defend the self against it, definitely, but true evil lies not in the soul of the demon, but in the heart of ordinary man (or woman)...

(after thoughts)

I do not know whether Descartes was a psychopath/sociopath. It appears he must have had very low empathy levels, but he shares that with many. The ability to show care to a being one feels an emotional connection with, has nothing to do with empathy, but is what I rather call 'selective empathy based on self benefit'. Many will care deeply for their dog or their cat, but won't give a dime for the suffering of dogs and cats in scientific research for example.

Something within me does not believe Descartes was a psychopath. His life's work in my view shows he was very capable to busy himself with things beyond just his self, and psychopathes have nothing but the self they concentrate on, every action and thought is aimed to benefit their own selves, nothing else.

Pondering though whether I can duck flying stones quick enough, as I feel making a thread on 'good and evil' (and that wouldn't just be two sentences and two emotes uh oh )

Sound is a longitudinal pressure wave so it will be created anyway when the tree falls, whether there is an ear in the area to receive (hear) it or not will make no difference.
