These days there are a lot of things that are more social and community based. There are some good and bads about them. Things like meetups where people come together on same interest within a town/city are happening. Therefore wondering to see if the world has progressed for people to come together and travel?

to me getting past that first meeting is going to be an obstacle....I don't know, maybe because it's a crazy messed up world and the people who look like they are ok, are the ones that do the most hideous crimes so I guess the trust factor for me is the big stumbling block

if they're picking up the tab, I'd say probably, yes....

Wouldn't do that if i am not really knows them well
I find it unique that 2000 some odd years ago men and women were called to follow a man to wander around the countryside not knowing where they were going or what they were getting into. Be it they did so out having to consider there must have been a better way of life than what they had. Today because of him Europe and the New world has a temple on every street corner to honor what he offered to the lost and fearful. Fear of the unknown is why Europe thought the world was flat. Until Columbus proved otherwise. Fear and mistrust is why our world today is in such turmoil. Life and love comes with risk. Yet as long as we hide behind our techno windows and draw the shades not willing to go the distance to find some happiness in this life we will always live in regret of not trying.
Hello, Thank You Folks, all those of you who responded. I would like to share my thoughts or learning from this Poll.
Europeans seem to be either liberal or open minded and trust worthy. Americans - Some of them may do it, depending on the "What do I have for me in it" factor ??, Lol, but thats true. Some do it if it seems fun, some are sckeptical. Asians- Outrightly cautious and wont go for it. Africans - Treads cautiously as well.
I have done these things: 1. Travelling with Strangers ( who are now friends). 2. Sleeping at Strangers houses( yes, through Couchsurfing). 3. Hosting a Stranger(s) in my house, and when I had to go to work, I handed over my house keys to them. :) ( My mind was, nothing is mine and I go without all this. Soo what the heck)... 4. Cooked for strangers and fed them. 5. Eaten with/or at homes of strangers.
So, it makes me think the world gives back to you what you give!
However to mention, I had some hesitation, about eating at strangers houses, but did it anyways! :).

Only if we traveled separately and stayed in different rooms etc etc.

I backpacked in Europe for 2 years in my youth and got used to meeting new people and traveling part of the road with them. It's fun if you keep your wits about you.

I love motorcycling alone and meeting great people.

Hey, I bet that was a heap of fun...
I did not do the back pack thing when I was young.. but I sure travelled and lived in different states here...
But back then, I always worked a couple of jobs.. at that time to pay off the Great Aussie Dream...
Now I can do all of that stuff, and I do..
(Mind tho... I still work 2 jobs)
Went off by myself twice this year... and planning to hop the pond next year...

Yeah traveling is great fun. Went to Hong Kong, Macau, Montreal and New York on my own this year...hopefully will get a chance to do a few others next year, too. If work allows

Lol, thats happened too... but with someone I knew for short period before we travelled. Myself and a single lady traveled on the same flight sitting side by side from CA to Orlando, spent 3 days roaming around together and stayed in same hotel, side by side. (absolutely no touching, kissing, sharing food, hahaha ). Only thing we shared was the rental car :)

Oh yes. I've travelled to several places alone and met people there. A couple of years ago, a few of us from another forum arranged to meet in Kiev and head to Pripyat. None of us had met before, and we all had a fantastic time, while seeing something we all held a mutual interest in.
