Other activities could be a lot more distracting while driving IMO.

I doubt it's going to matter at all what people are banned from doing cause either way they are going to keep doing what they've always done anyway.

Since we're talking about New Jersey drivers here....yes. They're not good at multi tasking. Any distractions could end up fatal.

Yet I see it everywhere. People texting while driving on the highway, every second person is talking on the phone in the car. It's ridiculous.

I'm not sure about how the other states are, but it's illegal to text or be on phone while driving here in Oklahoma, only thing is how in the world do the control and regulate it? I've been a passenger with driver talking and if they see cop up ahead they just place it on their lap until he passes by doh

Will I be arrested for drinking, eating or smoking whilst driving?

It is not a criminal offence in itself to drink, smoke or eat whilst driving a vehicle however there is a potential punishment of failing to drive with due care and attention. It is therefore a matter of how the individual activity affects your ability to drive reasonably and safely on the roads.

A common example is when a person lights a cigarette. It can be very difficult to drive with due care and attention since part of that person’s attention will be concerned with using a lighter.

The Highway Code states that motorists must “avoid distractions when driving such as loud music, trying to read maps, inserting a cassette or CD or tuning a radio, eating and drinking and smoking”.

Cell phone use is banned where I live too...very hefty fines involved but people still do it. I'm thinking the cops cruising along on the roads will have accidents while they're peering into every vehicle to see what people are doing. laugh

Hi stringman, this proposed law leaves a lot of discretion to police as it would allow them to ticket drivers found to “engage in any activity unrelated to the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.” wave

I know where I live there was something about texting while driving.

If people get caught eating while eating they should be fined.

Unless smoking in the vehicle would increase their insurance rates on their vehicle probably people should be fined. After all some smokers have dropped their cigs on the floor etc and it's obvious they burn.

JMO but I think anything that is taking your eyes off the road or hands not able to turn sterring wheel quickly is wrong. Hadn't heard about a N.J. law. We all do it at 1 time or another, but it is wrong!snowman2 very happy Made a snowman today. 2nd day of heavy snow here, typical for n.e. Ohio

Well, it seems like people are just looking for things to ban these days. Did you know in the early days of the automobile, windshield wipers got a bad rap because they might distract the driver. doh

All I know is if I were a passenger in a car and the driver decided to text somebody I would insist they stop the car and let me out. As a former trucker I have no problem talking on the CB radio while driving but I keep it short and I will even answer a cell phone call because I can do that without taking my eyes off the road but I wont place a call while driving. If I have to make a call, I'll pull off the road but it must be a very important call.
