With China's CO2 emissions accounting for 27% ( 36 billion tonnes ) of the global total and with animals like the elephant, rhinoceros, tiger and shark due to become extinct to feed China's demand for quack medicine, ornament and soup; would boycotting Chinese goods be an effective way to preserve the global environment?
I believe Japan and probably other Asian peoples are guilty of some of the damage you ascribe to China. I think boycotting Chinese goods will have the opposite effect though by keeping them in the dark ages when it comes to quack medicine although as the Chinese gain wealth their apatite for Shark, will probably increase. I think the Chinese government needs to get a handle on these issues through much stronger laws and also they need to embark on a comprehensive re-education plan to change some long standing beliefs by the people. It may take generations though, probably wont avoid the inevitable extinction of several species. Very sad.

Have you seen the CO2 emissions / Capita recently? I'm pretty sure Canada and the US top the list, per Capita. I find it disingenuous that anyone should lecture developing countries about the environment when much of the now Developed world have thoroughly sterilized their own environment.

If you look at the growth in the Chinese economy and the increase in the illegal trade in endangered animals the two go hand in hand. We could assume that the trade to Japan has declined in response to the decline in there economy. China has the desire, the means and the opportunity ( China is all over Africa ) and so its a logical conclusion that China is the culprit. China is signed up to CITES, but its a matter of implementation. China is endemically corrupt as is most of Africa. Combine the two and any idea of a proper regulatory system breaks down. You're correct that it will take a long time to re-educate them, but then again they are quick on the uptake and Chairman Mao managed to re-educate them in short order.
A while back I saw a show on one of the educational channels, you know, the ones the Republicans want to de-fund? It was about a group of environmentalists, you know, the ones the Republicans like to call "Tree Huggers" like it was a swear word?
Anyway, this group of dedicated people were making an attempt to ensure the survival of the Wide (White) Rhino by capturing a group of them where they were in danger of being killed by poachers and left to rot in the Sun without their horn, and transporting them to Australia where poachers can't get to them. Thank you Australia What a shame that it has to come to this, that an animal, indigenous to it's own continent is only safe from the "human" inhabitants of it's home range by removing it to a totally alien country.
