Well here in MA, I have posted to see if people would like to do a meetup and I dont have any response in all of 40 days. Wondering if the old fashioned face to face meeting happens at all these days?

No, I'd find it awkward trying to make conversation with people whom I have only seen on an internet forum and didn't know in real life.

I would. Of course I am assuming that all of us are real and basically honest here so meeting should be something to look forward too. If you plan it in the US and you tell me ahead of time I will be there!! thumbs up

Even if the general site population promise to turn up, only 1 in 3 will actually turn up! I've been to one, and I got wedged next to some freak from central Europe!

Please don't base a long flight on the basis to meet people, who even if they lived locally wouldn't turn up. Tie it in with a trip to donsomething you really want to see, that way if others let you down it won't ruin your evening.

From experience, I doubt even if there were a get together i'd turn up, as I hardly know anyone left on the site anymore. Who knows though, never say never!

I Would like to go to one, about 4 years ago, I set up one and with a CS Get Together thread, about 50 people Signed up, said they would come to one in Missouri, as it was centrally Located in the United states..

I went through a lot of efforts, got Motel Rates posted, and had a Place to Meet, With Bars and Restaurants all within Walking Distance, as the days got closer, it got down to about 4-5 people...

At that point....I Canceled the whole thing, and only Wasted My time, Gas, Phone calls, and Posting it all... I went to Great Efforts...

Sad to say, but this was My Result!

Been there, done that! I kept my word and flew back from my girlfriends home in Malta at the time, to get to sleep on a sofa, and pay through the nose for the pleasure! I must have been mad to fly home early, instead of spending another weekend with my girlfriend at the time.

I kept my word, others were just full of hot air, and it in hindsight was a bit of a waste of time! Sounds bad doesn't it.......but it describes my weekend, but the organiser worked her butt off, and it was appreciated.

Others just talked a good game, then didn't turn up.

See the above post. People will say of course they will turn up. Organise one, spend months booking venues, hotels, doing maps, distributing emails, just as our organiser did and see the quantity of prople who will mess you around!

You might feel as pissed off as me if you gavd yor word, and flew over 1000 miles and then found I had to sleep on a sofa in a living room. I honestly didn't have the heart to just walk out, especually after the effort one lsdy went to. But would I do it again, to meet 20 strangers, who i don't know......

You can guess the answer to that one. I'd much rather arrange to spend the time with someone i knew, who's genuine, who will actually bother to turn up!

well with all that being said...I, and don't take this the wrong way, don't want to depend on someone to setup my motel and whatever, that's what the internet is for, I'm a big girl, don't need someone doin' the dirty work for me...that's why CS should step in and create one...people might feel more secure that way, instead of traveling thousands of miles into the middle of nowhere IMO

Yep. It just makes you think are the people who wasted your time that disrespectful normally, or do they think it's ok as they donn't know you, therefore it doesn'matter!

I'd have much rather arranged to fly back from Malta in my case, to spend the weekend with a friend. Live and learn.

I could have spent the weekend catching up with a friend in Vienna, but on this occasion, I made a bad choice.

I've been the organiser on another website I won't name, but it's the same everywhere. Peoples word doesn't mean sod all online!!!!

Do I want to listen to more old flannel when I've seen it all before? No thanks. I prefer mixing with adults, not people who you cannot even rely to turn up.

I hope your experience wasn't too expensive an experiment, just to have your time wasted.

At one time I would have, but not anymore. I prefer to meet people individually, or maybe a small group that I do know, as I have done over the years.

How and why would CS step in? They just host the site for free, and its much appreciated. :)

I think that , the problem is that in big places like where you and Larry are, its getting a central place to meet. Its the cost of the travel. I think it works in parts of Europe because people are closer maybe? I dont know. But it seems to work with the Irish meets.

I took others at their word.....

A lesson learned, I was first there at the apartment, yet i got the sofa! Had i known i'd have booked my own hotel, or not attended at all. The difference was, I gave my word, and flew home early to sleep on a bloody sofa bed, paying hundreds of euros for the pleasure!

Had others told me the truth, i'd have decided on Malta (30 degrees in Janurary...spending time with my gf at the time) or decided in whether i wanted to go to Dublin, so sleep on a couch, and get wet, and bored, for the cost of hundreds of Euros.

Short version was i was mad to make the trip!

Oh I truly understand what your saying...and no you weren't mad to make the trip, you put your trust in others...guess I learned a long time ago, never, ever put your life or well being in strangers hands....so I personally would have booked everything myself guaranteeing I had a place...I would have been very disappointed to the fact nobody showed up sad flower I'm sorry...but the whole world isn't like that, well not in my corner anyways bouquet

SoonerGal: sounds like you did! Was it in KC? well, I can understand from the other view point too, would be scary going in the middle of nowhere, not knowing who was going to show up or anything...that's why I think a mediator would make it more secure...you know, kind of chaperoning it per se

Yes It was By KCI (MCI) Airport, and I even had a Friend with a School Bus who would bring people on Tours of KC, For Tips... the Bars had Bands, Ect, yes, I was the one who did it all... I went (DROVE) to every Bar, every Motel, every Restaurant, and talked to the Owners and Managers, and Made sure everything was a Quality Atmosphere, Got Price Schedules, and Entertainment Schedules for the event times...
And took me like hours just to post it all on the thread, then You have to Get an OK from CS to even Proceed with a Get Together Thread,Had to do a PRE Thread first to see if their was enough Interest, was about a Week waiting to see if you could be eligible...

Never again for me to schedule one...

Well I went for dinner and missed all this exchange but I can see where you are coming from. From my end I know that if I commit to something I will live up to it but of course making a trip will not be just about that - I will make sure my trip is worth the while as well.

I have been here only a few months and I sometimes question if everyone here is actually looking to meet someone or is just using the site as a form of entertainment.............who knows?? Maybe there are a few honest ones; if only we could find them!!

I am from here Larry - I mean I am 100% Belizean but fortunately for me I have no problems obtaining visas for anywhere in the world. I travel to the US often (maybe 4 to 5 times for the year) and have a ten year visa for the US; I don't need visa for the UK, Ireland, Mexico, Central America and for Europe I have no problem getting a Schengen visa either. I guess the issues or the difficulties probably come along with nationalities that have difficulty obtaining visas in the first place.

So, 2 pages of response and mostly experiences that are not worth it.
So just going to be happy that folks are atleast chatting up on here!!. With this, I do smell that soon, people also would not physically type stuff on forums. The internet would know your character and will start making comments for you. Thats the problem of making of machines smarter than you. It may become a reality, by the time I go to the corner bar!
