2girlsnocup: Scratch behind the surface of popular music, and there are some really good bands and artists out there. un Ignore the mainstream and find your own.

Given what is played on both the AM and FM stations keeps reminding me of an old quote from Friedrich Nietzsche: "Only sick music makes money today." Then I think of what Luciano Pavarotti once said,"You don't any brains to listen to music"...Seems to fit rather well. One must remember though, that not everyone likes, or appreciates and in some cases, can't understand some types of sounds that many would not call music and here one should recall what President Richard Nixon once said: "I have often thought that if there had been a good rap group around in those days,(his teen-age years), I might have chosen a career in music, instead of politics." Nixon doin' Rap...???
Music has been in steady decline for the last 30 years, the 70s was the last decade to have a broad enough pallate of music where just about every genre shared chart space (in england anyway)... The 90s and 00s died at the hands of boy bands and 'musical impressarios', though i know strictly speaking the beatles were the first genre 'boy band' and 70s duo, chinny/chap (nicky chin and mike chapman, the walsh and cowell of the 70s) were pushing bands like sweet and mud, and of course we had the bay city rollers of the 70s, but there was enough choice back in the day to offset the weaker material....
Music is merely an expression,.....Beethoven's crowd would probably label what you enjoy as "sad",....so no, today's music is not sad,...it is merely the music of the day,....just change the radio channel and you will find your preferred genres,...

I enjoy most modern music (except country) across genres. Somehow hanging on to the music that was played in my younger days and not opening myself is like wearing the same hairstyle for 30 years or the same style of clothes for 30 years. I always find something that I like, whether it's homegrown or foreign.

I think that in this time period many forms of music are indeed recognized as music. I may not enjoy some but then I know first hand that there are those that don't really care for my own music. So I do not see it as "Sad", just the way it is.

True...but may I add... because my parents hated my music, I got to learn all about theirs... and appreciate it as well.. then of course, my mum being a piano player... all classical... so I learnt about that too...
now my son has his funky band, which rattles my head, but that is OK too... I just am happy that he is happy.
