Good question; if I ever did ask. I have no recollection of any answer. Hell, I'm not even sure which parent was present at my birth... Then again, whoever named me didn't do any of us a favour. It was the wrong name in the wrong country at the wrong time.

I think you can probably count on your mother having been present.

My Mom..............she said my dad was so disappointed I was not a boy (he had already chosen a boy name) so instead of getting stuck with the name Gabriel she named me!
Ha! I knew her and that is why I have my doubts! For all I know, she may have been at a local cafe' with Dali...%D For myself, I named my 2 children with complete agreement. , and my our cats.
My parents had "agreed" upon a boy's name and a girl's name before I was born. Now, who had greater influence over the names is up for debate. My middle name, however, was chosen by tradition. My god-father's first name is my middle name. (In this case a god-parent is a brother or sister of the mother or father who has agreed to take care of the child should anything happen to the parents.)

Im 2nd eldest in family of 8. I was given away to my maternal Grandmother at 5months. My 'mother' went on to have a huge brood that i dont know or havent seen in about 30years .... too long here. Whats the reason for saying all that ? Well my mother decided on Rosario. The priest in London was a cockney and couldnt pronounce it, So my paternal Godmother, said what about Rosemary. They baptised me Rosemary. My maternal Grandmother who took me as a baby and reared me thought Rosemary wasnt very nice and changed it to Rosemarie [after the Song Rosemarie I love you] and so thats my name !! I am called Rosie though, I am reasonably happy with my name.

Ali it probably seems very unlikely that a mother would reject her baby and give it away and never phone or write to see how it was in your culture but It did happen to me, and now, I am not ashamed of it, it is my mother who should be ashamed, I wonder what will the Blog be about!! I shall have to wait. Glad i inspired somebody today . x

My name came from a friend of my Father, well they were in the military together. While on the ship they saw a man overboard and they flipped a coin to decide who would be the one to save him. My Father won the coin toss and the friend went overboard to save the man that was drowning. In the panic of the drowning man he somehow drowned my Father's friend in his panic. It all happened very fast and by the time anyone else could offer support the man that attempted the rescue was dead. I was given his name at birth in honor of the death of my Father's friend in the Coast Guard. The name I received was the other man's "last" name. I have never met another person with that name. Not as a First name like myself. that's the story.
