I think things have to grow and someone coming newly into someone's life, telling them what to do, is probably not a good start.
The other way around though - I do like animals and grew up with them, but I wouldn't be too impressed having a cat sitting in a food preparation area or table, sharing a bed with a dirty dog or not having their animals house trained. I can't see myself with someone who doesn't take basic hygiene into account, too.
If I get a cat or dog and they behave - live and let live.
Also most people consider their pets to be family and I sure wouldn't get rid of one of my family members. On second thought maybe I would and I have a couple of older brothers someone can have real cheap.
All joking aside pets can be more loyal then some humans I know.
I don;t have pets either and i would not live with an animal indoors. Hunting dogs or horses that had a barn area or such I would not object to. I would not ask anyone to give up a house pet for me. So I make it clear that I don;t go the pet route right up front. It's a no. not negotiable.

The pu**y can stay but the cat has to go.
Somehow I don't think so.
