It's me the individual, not we the people, Reb.

2008 has made something of an impression on the young(at least in this country). Charity has gone up, crime has gone down and we're more likely to believe in success by all means, but not by any means as the great recession was a real lesson(for those still youthful enough to learn lessons)in the pitfalls of ill-gotten success. But it's still a case of me the individual(unless you're in a land that's going up in the world - such as the Far East).

It's no good reb to denounce the government's selfishness when selfishness permeates every strata of society. The Baby Boomer elite and sub-elites that have crippled western civilisation would behave no differently if you were to replace them with the Boomer poor. This is just the way that generation is. They've been able to blow a massive inheritance and leave its posterity in the red in service to a self luxury unparalleled in Human history and this shows, even after the great recession they caused, in every utterance they speak and misconception they have.

Anyway, there will never be that level of prosperity again to afford such decadence. Ours is an era of great humbling in the West.

A Democracy usually gets the government it deserves. By nature the politician is power-driven, selfish and doesn't care about you, but if you draw your political class from a foundation that is already decadent, self-righteous and doesn't care about politics, then the government will reflect this. And the necessary evil which is government becomes all the more ominous.

You can sum up the West by saying that we've sold our own value to live for today. We're like the plumber who sells own his tools so he can spend a month in the pub.

There is still very much a "we the people" here in the USA and the gov't is going find that out very soon.

There is also still indivdualism as a trademark of the traditional make up of the American personality. Being a land of the law the American social contract (primarily the constitution and local law) is also American tradition. We have always understood the need to temper individualism with a social contract (or at least most do). It's called "your rights end where my begin."

Otherwise, we do have a large prison system.

For the gov't to regain popular respect, however, they need to stand up to corporations and special interests, and foreign nationals here illegally and pay more attention to the needs of the middle class citizen in America. There needs to be legislation to limit campaign contributions, for starters.

Reb, people as a group wield a lot of power. The only way to strip people of their power is to convince them that acting as an individual is great and good. Divide and conquer.

Back in ancient China, in Shun Tzu's time, he moved people around the country so that they couldn't establish roots and had to continually adjust to a new environment. By doing that, they were too busy to riot and organize. It worked like a charm, by the way.

You know, 50% of all Americans today live at or below the poverty level. Imagine if they rioted or made demands about better labor practices etc. Our government would be so screwed. So they have to be kept believing that they have no power and they're kept busy worrying about nonsense. Something to think about.
