I went to the local market to get some veggies and to do some errands then I did see an elder man asking for some coins. My intuition said no so I did pass him but after a few steps I did come back to give him some coins.
He did grab my arm and pulled me towards him and said “I want you” but I did free myself immediately. He was lucky I was distracted or I could have hit him with my umbrella or my hand.
Should I have hit him so next time he will think twice before grabbing anyone else.

Ccincy: I would have never approached him.He could have had a weapon for all you knew.
I have encountered several people on the streets who were so out of contact with reality it didnt make any differnce who you were or what you did. So either avoid, run, or disable.

I was approached by a lady asking for money.I found a employee and told what had taken place.I male extra sure that I didn't see that lady again.Or she had followed me out to my car.

since you were able to free yourself without striking him I think it's best you did not...tho' you were within your right to do so, it might have escalated things.
I hope you reported him to the management of the store or local authorities AND I am very glad that you were OK!
I agree w/ raphael - sounds like a crazy ole coot ... lol
Nasty incident but in this country, hitting someone in that situation would probably see you apprehended for assault
I tend to avoid beggars these days - a guy approached me near my local shopping mall the other day, I refused then watched him walk off and approach another woman .. who calmly opened her bag right in front of him (he was standing so close their bodies were almost touching) and rifled through her purse for coins.
In seconds he could have snatched her bag and made off with it, or worse, what was she thinking
Try to avoid hitting people unless you know what you are doing, and even then its best avoided as it generally only escalates the problem.
A great number of homeless people, if not most, are mentally ill. Violence is not a good way of dealing with illness or disability, would you beat some one for having cancer?
Think about giving money to a registered homeless charity instead of giving to people on the street.

Should have hit his Cup and send those Coins flying, that would have nipped everything in the Bud! But you probably acted correctly, since escalating the Situation might have gotten you into hot Water!

Could understand if you did especially if they come right up to you to ask but best not to I think. Only bring more trouble for yourself.
If people feel sorry for homeless (me, for one) and want to give them some coins, might be better for the homeless person if you gave them a sandwich or a drink (water, tea, coffee, soup, orange juice) instead, to the value of what you intended to give them or what you can spare. At least they'd be fed for another while. If by some rare offchance, you have the homeless shelter number on you or know where it is then even better, ring them.
We don't know what's gone on in their lives for them to end up homeless unless we go round talking to each and every one of them and that may not be such a good idea with some. We can only guess or make assumptions.

Agressive panhandling, is a problem in a lot of places around the world.
To answer your question - I think no. You hitting him or not would not deter his future behavior. It only says something about your behavior. Should you go around hitting being in public?

I would have done the same thing you did, life. I wouldn't have hit him but certainly shoved him away

I totally agree that is why I feel she should have reported the behavior. The authorities might be able to give this man the support he needs for his condition....whatever that is
and as you stated if folk get to aggressive w/ panhandling it needs to be nipped in the bud
many homeless already know where the shelters and pantries are. but that does not mean they could not benefit from some intervention

I don't mean to be rude.. but its a silly question. No one has the right to hit anyone. I know he didn't have the right to did what he did, but hitting him would have been just as low.
Don't be fooled into thinking just because he was elderly he could be harmless,..,if defending yourself in an emergency no matter who it is you are defending yourself from it is your right,,
I would have given him a good telling off when you out of danger zone,, maybe the man was dementional who knows but still it shouldn't be tolerated...glad you okay.

Your intuition was good. Next time don't change your mind.
Panhandling is a societal problem, and unfortunately, some panhandlers, for whatever the reason, be it belligerence, mental illness, addictions, or what have you, have taken to overt aggression in order to obtain funds.
Striking another, in most countries, is coded as an assault, though self-defense is indeed a rationale that can get charges dismissed. Had your situation escalated to the point that you thought your person was in immediate danger you could have been justified in striking your assailant - but this may have led to an immediate escalation of the situation that could have become very serious.
Would striking him make him think twice before grabbing another? I sincerely doubt it.

I wouldn't have hit him, but I sure would have given him a piece of my mind before I walked away. BUT, if he grabbed me a second time, well, that would be a whole other story!

The key to situations like this is to defuse, not to light the fuse! A confident calmness should be exercised. Shouting down a homeless person, could escalate matters.
Calmly freeing yourself from their grip and stating, "Sorry, no change" would be the appropriate course of action (along with reporting the situation, time of occurence, and location to the authorities). If someone is aggressive enough to grasp a total stranger, do you really know what they are truly capable of? When I encounter a bear in the woods I simply try to defuse, get clear, and then report. Shouting down a bear? Only if I am armed and prepared to take it to the next level should the bear not appreciate my vocalizations!!!
And shy of the odd bad apple, watch how the police deal with people like this - calm, attempting to defuse.
The minute matters escalate, arrest occurs - hopefully with the minimum of force required. Remember, anytime a situation escalates to a physical confrontation, the odds quickly rise that someone is going to get hurt. Homeless people who panhandle can be powerfully feral sometimes.
