Living in a VERY dry climate and drought year here in Northern California, we are threatened all the time by fire, it is normal here, which it shouldn't be.
Myself I have watched fires but have never had them threaten my home. When I was little we had a huge fire in front of our house, but our lovely firemen got it out, it did burn a few of our acres. But we never left the house.
Just 40 miles away they had evacuations in effect and 1200 acres so far have burned, 15% contained. We see these statistics every day. We resent electrical storms in the summer time, careless smokers, off road daredevils and plain idiots who decide they are going to mow their fields when there is a ban on it.
We are in the most severe drought since the 1970s it is scary right now.
I hope the majority of you never have to experience an evacuation or even a fire near you.
We get fires on the mountains aomewhere just about every year in this part of the world, but it's just brush with enough rocky barriers that it doesn't reach the inhabited areas.
It's enough of an adrenalin rush seeing that. I can't imagine how frightening it must be living in a more vulnerble area.

I was working for my husband in 1977 in a railroad station. I not only smelled smoke but saw it in the attic of this 90 year old wooden building.
He ran outside to see what was happening and I called the fire department. In no time at all the building was engulfed in fire. We were never able to work in this historical building again and had to resort to other means.
I inhaled a lot of smoke and saw flames coming out of a building that we took for granted would always be there. Years later it was demolished, the tracks were taken up, the engines were sold and now a shopping center stands were the railroad that my father, husband, father-in-law and I worked at.
