I remember Keith Richards being interviewed on the radio many years ago. When asked if he thought the Stones music was art, he replied, "The only thing I know about art is it's short for Arthur."

music can be a expression where words can't explain, like art it can go deeper into one's psyche
Music is art even when it isn't. Unlike architecture or painting which can be pure utility, music is always made to provoke an emotional reaction. And the music of the age always passes comment on the state of the age. This is why it's art.
The amount of tacky, manufactured pop music(which I think exists as more of a kind of anti-art - but still art)we have today says that we are a Democratic society of equality where the mob sets the tone. The music of today says that our art and character and society have lost all sense of pedigree and quality.

antigona: I´d say it´s the most direct art. It goes directly from the ear to the heart.
I agree, I once saw an explorer play a classical music recording to an amazon tribe that had almost no outside contact or experience of music. "It must be some beautiful kind of language" their chief said in amazement.

Nice story. I´ve heard -and believe- that music is "the universal language"
