Kaybee50: I did, for 20 years of my life. It was all-consuming, unimaginable stress, and the trade-offs are things that cannot be retrieved, such as not getting holidays, missing important family events, little social life.
I made the decision 7 years ago to change my life from work-focused to Life-focused. It was a several year process to achieve this.
I know the feeling. But it is worth it.
U can provide for ur family as u earn the big bucks.

epirb: Being your own boss is not quite "that" as I seem to work for the tax department , the banks , council and others who all demand time . Being employed by somebody usually means you have "one" boss and is far simpler .
I dont agree with u except to a certain extent.
U r ur "own" boss, but u have various clients to keep happy but they r only there until u have done the job. Then u move on to the next.
Except if ur cleints demand work of u 24/7. Then they r effectively rule u.

I was self employed for the last 4 or 5 years (I can't remember anymore) and I have to say, it was the exact opposite of what you, and seemingly most other people, have described
I did it so that I could have more time off, not less, and that's exactly how it worked for me. Did I make "big bucks"? No, but I was in control of my own life. If I wanted a day off, I took it and made up the time during the rest of the week. Maybe the difference was that I didn't employ anyone else, just me, on my lonesome ownsome

I am my own boss, started a landscape gardeneing business two years ago after getting made redundant. I earn 60% less than I used to as a sales rep that used to hardly ever be home as away working living in lonely hotels and eating alone in restaurants.Yes the money was great that meant I could afford wonderful holidays to the far east and a nice cars and no financial worries but with the lifestyle came the cost of stress, being away from home a lot, long hours at work and work admin when I was at home and having a non existent social life as it was work, work, work ! Since I set up my own company it has been challenging but entirely rewarding as I work for myself,no horrible manager's or company director's getting their pound of flesh from me and the money I earn goes into my pocket not their bonuses ! Also the freedom of talking time off when I want it and having holidays when I want to not having to fill out company holiday forms only to have the dates I requested rejected because someone else in my department wanted the same dates off. Starting my own company and working for myself has been the best thing I have ever done work wise,it has brought me freedom and happiness I never experienced when working for a company and I highly recommend it.I only wish I did it in my twenties rather than waiting until my late forties.

ali110: As illegal Mexican pay to cross the usa Border ? (Just fun)
Hi Lifey
Do you mean me paying anyone to take me across the border illegally Ali? I do not need to pay anyone. If I wanted or needed to do it I would do it myself
But not, I do observe the law and I have never been an illegal immigrant and certainly never a “Pollero” or “Coyote” (people that do the trafficking of people into other countries illegally).
What about you Ali?
Any illegal activity of yours and your family? Your secret is safe with me.

I am sort of "boss", have about 30 people working for me, but it is not my business. Still, I am responsible for budget - how to spread it, how to pay them, and how much they have to sell in order to get proper ratio. Plus, all relations between different markets, stores, events,.... And I loveeeeeeeeeee when all of them say: "You seem more like a friend than boss" - but being that kind of person I am getting them to put more effort to get job done. But, when comes to some serious level - I am putting new mask on my face (dont like it that much, but sometimes you have to have it) - a serious one, to get job done. This coming week my big boss coming for two days, and have to have all the time that serious mask
There are many different fields that may provide opportunities for people to become business owners or just their own boss in general.
They will have different requirements according to their products and/or services. Operating costs and other over head will vary greatly on these factors and more.
With some of the current taxes and overhead being forced in the U.S.; it's not something I would venture any more.
I do have the schedule I want. I don't have the headaches of crew management, production, quality...etc. I have the health insurances, payed vacation, and holidays. Okay, so my annual pay is a little over 1/2 of what it used to; I have time for family and a life that I didn't have before. My off time is truly off time.
I am also one of those who does not feel it is "worth it" it is not something I have any interest in at all. for many of the same reasons already mentioned on here. what I get tired of is constantly being bombarded with offers from these companies who sponsor start ups when I do a job search. They are seldom up front about what they are suggesting.

Obstinance_Works: It was hard work and humbling in the early days but now I probably work half the hours that I used to for the same pay and then some.
If you're a smart worker who can read people and you don't have a trace of lemming in your personality then being your own boss may be for you - you'll probably be better than most bosses out there who I think are better described as senior drones.
