I once 'tamed' a wild cat, to the point where it would come indoors to eat, and even let me stroke it, but if I picked it up it panicked, struggled and scratched me.
After a couple of years it had mellowed to the point where it would bump my hand for a caress, and even sit on my lap, but still went ballistic if the door was closed, or it felt trapped in any way. I had to ignore it for it to be truly comfortable.
I think some of us are like that. Those who jump into laps and settle down immediately don't go homeless for long.
