I never married because I couldn't see a "forever".
I only would have considered a family if I would have been fairly sure of a long-term, family orientated relationship with shared responsibilities if kids would be planned. Then I think marrying makes sense to secure kids and in case something happens, the remaining parent.

I would had been married 35 years to my late husband in Sept 11th of this year if he hadn't of passed away in 2007.
I had married him because I was in love with him.
He was the most loving husband to me and a wonderful father to our son.

I would marry again if HE wanted to, but me ...I can take it or (mostly) leave it.
it also requires a deep commitment and feeling of love based on a meaningful relationship. So the chances of me being involved are fairly slim lol

The only reason that I can think of is that it gives the spouse certain legal rights that you otherwise don't have (i.e. if a person is sick and in the hospital, preferential tax and mortgage treatment, etc.). Unfortunately kids don't get the same treatment in school if his/her parents aren't married, regardless what the law says, so for the benefit of the children, it's a good idea to marry when you're in your younger years.
Beyond that, I see no reason to marry. I can see right here on CS how "serious" a lot of people take the entire institution of marriage - not.

I tend to agree. I am really not as jaded as I sound about marriage. it's not a goal I have, though. I think you've outlined some good reasons for it, but I still like to think that people marry because they love each other and expect to always be together.
