TenderBabe: We all know that taxes are Constitutional in the United States. But are they fair? Some people pay a higher percentage than others.
no, I don't think that you shoul pay a higher percentage because you earn more. The top 5% of earners already pay about 50% of tax. This seems unfair to me If you work harder/smarter to earn more you pay a higher tax rate! How's that fair?
I believe taxes are equalizer. For the most reasons of social services and function. It's fair in a sense that you live in a society where services don't discriminate.
But for you to know how isn't fair, you have to observe or look at poor countries where taxation is a matter of bribery. No public toilet, no medical benefits etc.
Here's how it works, a rich businessman doesn't give his actual due payment or tax to a legitimate honest public servant. Instead he pays the corrupt employee and puts that payoff to his pocket. Now who's been unfairly treated? The public. I will continue, that person who collected the business tax? He won't get investigated if he has a mansion, a Ferrari, etc. Yes tax in that country is not only unfair, it's a disservice to the people.
In our country? I don't think so. Bill Gates who clears about half a billion every year goes to most of his tax shield, his foundation which is serving the whole world.
I believe that our capabilities to make money is a gift therefore sharing it to the society that gives us back in terms of services, protection and ability to prosper, for me, it's fair.

Some are fair, i.e. taxes on income to support roads and infrastructure; some are nonsense i.e. excise taxes and some are clearly unfair i.e. inheritance and estate taxes because they tax your income twice.
Income taxes should be progressive. If a person who earns 10,000 a year pays 50%, then they have nothing left. If a super rich heir (who hasn't worked a day in his life) pays 50% on his capital gains in lieu of income tax, then that hurts the heir a lot less than the person who makes do on a small income.
That's why added value taxes are inheritently unfair to people with a lower income.

I remember that woman by the name Leona? she said only little people have to pay taxes/not rich ones
tarris: yep, therein lies my issue too! In our western societies there is no excuse to live in an impoverished state. Sure, there's exceptions but we live in an era of opportunity and plenty, comparatively speaking. Those here saying that high earners should pay a higher % are driven by jealousy and envy. A base human emotion. As you said, many receiving social security are simply to lazy to get outta bed and have a go!
hi yer .yes....i know many..to lazy to work...tho can sit in a pub..drinking all night.... living off his 8 childrens family allowence.

yep, well I live in NZ, the worlds first welfare state. The system was designed to be a hand up not a hand out. There are now multiple generational welfare bludgers here. On welfare pay day they are lined up outside the bottle shop/off license or whatever you call it there, before it opens. We call it 'drop kick day'!! Yet I work lots of hours to make good money and some left wing liberal moans that I'm 'rich' so should pay more tax so these societal leeches can have more money!! I'm all for kids receiving free healthcare etc as it is not their fault but much of our tax money is sucked up by these drop kicks, who are in perfect health but choose not to make any effort.

I agree with Ron Paul... 'Ron Paul supports the elimination of the income tax and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He asserts that Congress had no power to impose a direct income tax and has introduced legislation to repeal of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified on February 3, 1913.
An income tax is the most degrading and totalitarian of all possible taxes. Its implementation wrongly suggests that the government owns the lives and labor of the citizens it is supposed to represent.
Tellingly, “a heavy progressive or graduated income tax” is Plank #2 of the Communist Manifesto, which was written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and first published in 1848.'
SS ... Social security is a Ponzi scheme and should be aborted. I paid into and my late wife paid into but I will never see a penny of it. Save Medicare; abort Social Security.

If we didn't have to pay our taxes the infrastructure of the country would fall apart, roads would crumble, there wouldn't be any military to save us from the bad guys.
It's not about what's fair. Taxes are necessary. How else would the country be repaired and developed?

why do we need to be 'equal'? There will always be greater and lesser people than yourself. Don't compare yourself to others or you will become vain and bitter. Desiderata.

The fairest way to do it would for there to be a standard percentage of ten percent (not the usual 30 to 40!!) for absolutely EVERYBODY, including corporations. No sweetheart deals, no breaks for the rich, etc...If this were done, the reason it would be the fairest is because people who were willing to work hard/more hours would not be penalized by being thrust into an artificially higher tax bracket. i.e. it is possible to lose money working overtime in the present system. This way, a hard worker could "earn" his way to being rich, which is what we (America) says we do, anyway. Let's walk the talk.

I would totally support a flat tax of say 15 or 20%. I would come out smelling like a rose with a deal like that.
Nidifugous: That's a problem with the social services policies, not taxation.
well as a significant part of our tax system goes toward supporting social services I'd think the idea of the two being inextricably linked is fairly well grounded

Here, the percentages vary greatly by state and even by municipality. I don't know how things work in NZ.
Do you believe social services should be scrapped? if not, which ones would you support through taxation? What percentage of revenue would you think is feasible to dedicate to social services (i.e. unemployment, mental health care, hospice, orphan care, child services, etc.)?

The young are the ones with gripe to grind on this issue. A Millennial will need to be twice as good as a Baby Boomer to get the same out of life, and yet we'll pay more tax.
Anyway, the fairest thing to do now would be to slash pensions and cut taxes for the young. No political party has a policy whereby taxes are levied on the poor to subsidise the plushy lives of the middle and rich, and yet this is exactly what's happening to the young.
