I agree, to a certain extent, but the bond that can form between a pet and its owner goes beyond supply and demand.
My dog was my companion, for many many years .. the one who appeared at the window when he heard my car pull up, then turned triple somersaults as I walked through the door.
The one who enjoyed walking with me from when he was 9 weeks old until just prior to his death at 13.5 years.
The one who lay at my feet when my heart broke then knocked stuff off the pantry shelves to let me know he was hungry
And a million other things that enriched my life and I'm so grateful for his company through all those years
