Prejudice is endemic in nearly all societies and groups of any kind.
It's in the very fabric of our languages, cultures and traditions.
Maybe it would be more functional to ask how we learn to unravel our prejudices.
For me, being of mixed origins was fairly key, but it was my dad who sowed the seeds. I remember visiting his office when I was about 7 years old and him being horribly embarrassed that I thought the young women typists were his secreataries. I was informed that they worked there just the same as he did and the only reason he had an office on his own was because the sound of their fingernails clicking on the typewriter keys drove him potty and besides, they liked to talk to each other while they worked.
I imagine he was horribly embarassed they were paid less, too.
Way to go, dad.
Actually, I learned a lot from my mum, too. She survived war-time Germany and then suffered yet more prejudices emigrating to England post-war, as did I going to school in the same era. As far as I can work out, some of the teachers viewed me as a Jewish imposter in a Catholic school, whilst the kids seemed to think I was the most diminutive member of the SS.
It's not like I can't recognise negative discrimination when I see it, whether it's directed at myself, at others, or my own culturally learned prejudices.
220chris: this poll is about predjudice of any kind and whether taught by parents or learned later
I can only laugh at you ... you're making the assumption that EVERYONE ( as you are asking everyone) is prejudiced against others.
That's a loaded question ... where 'does that come from' ?
There's a general recognition that what we see in others is a refection of ourselves ... so, does reflect that YOU are prejudiced and therefore see it in others?
I'll turn the question back to you ... Where did you learn ?

We have Learned prejudice everywhhere. Prejudice have to do with lack of information and about take advantages or just not considereing others by supposing some people ( usually people from The Group that we belong to or want to belong) are right., better or are superior. The hole world is full of prejudice:
We learn prejudice with parents, friends, neighborous, schools, books, magazines, midia in general. etc.
The important thing about prejudice is that it has a function and a target: If you understand who or what the target is, you Can stop reproducing it.
One clue: The midia target is you money, The média is you ego or selfestim (. You can Be The best, it is for special like you, your bode is not ok, etc, etc, etc)
What I learned was from experience, And what I learned is that it was all to often that people would judge me for different reasons that ranged from the Religious beliefs my Mother had to the fact my hair was longer and I took Ballet when I was a lot younger. The above went on in my pre teens and later when I decided to be a Hairstylist I was judged (discriminated against) by other stylists because I was a straight Male. And at the same time I was discriminated and even attacked both verbally and physically because people assumed I was "Gay". So unfortunately I learned that people often judge others on social status, Color, even the way we look without hesitation. As much as all this seemed to be a big let down I took on a belief long ago to either get to know people before I made any kind of judgement upon if they were unfair or dangerous...and to try and see the good attributes in people regardless of race, color or where they went to church (or no church at all). I could not vote in your poll as it did not seem to clarify exactly just what it meant being "taught". Meaning that you could be taught good or bad...you could have been taught one thing and have been disgusted by it and lived a life doing everything not to follow those "teachings".

You are grown up.
You are using your knowlegde and fact to make decision, and you are not alowing others or old perceptions leading you.
bonanata: You are wrong, man. If this were true we Will Love just our mothers, since their faces that we See and recognaise better from early age.
Prejudice has to do with pre conceptions. As you dont have The true conception about something, you figure it out.
Great in knowlegde, Great in heart.
My "opinion" is based on reading about several studies regarding the "racial empathy gap" and the less reliable nature of cross racial eye witness identification.
It's a real problem in this country.
It intereferes with black folks ability to get proper pain medications prescribed, contributes to false convictions, and unfair prison sentencing.
It's not a hard study to do....
Photograph a couple dozen people of various races being pricked with a pin, mix in a couple with a dull pin to lessen the pain. Have people look at the pictures and rate the peoples pain. Look for the racial bias.

Great!
You are very kind. I can only tell people from what I have experienced and at the same time I have to keep a hopeful thought for today and even for tomorrow and the future in whatever form it may take in this ever changing world. But if I was very fortunate I think I would meet someone as nice as you and maybe we would make a real "salute" to the better times to be had while we are fortunate to walk this terrain.

You read what you want to read. I guess You are reading stuffs where people are justifying treating human beings based on steriotypes.
That Gap can just exist If people dont get know each other and dont get use to se others cultures. Like a kid afraid of strangers.
Human beings brains are able to overcome differences among them ( If they want, of course) because The differences are so small that I almost can See it.

Ohhh, thanks.
Let's keep ours hope Up :
This planet is amazing, life is to short and we can not be happy cause they invented that money is The most important thing and small human beings differences is The problem...

So studies are of no interest to you?
No reason to listen to science?
You know about people.
You already know what's wrong, with a study you've never seen.
I understand, I won't bother you with my silliness again.
You're comment about us reading what we want to is fairly accurate, bonata.
It appears that in your passion to see negative didcrimination overcome you have done just that.
I applaud your passion, but unless we understand all the various mechanisms of our prejudice, it will be very slow going (and likely faulty) indeed.
Ocee was making a point about one of the mechanisms of prejudice...and if I know Ocee (I do, we've been friends for years) it was with a view to resolving our prejudices and their impact.
The opinions that worry me are the ones where people deny having prejudices at all. Having the self-awareness to recognise our prejudices, the balls to admit to them and the humility to learn is fairly key when it comes to breaking down barriers and sharing the love.
jac_the_gripper: I'd like to ammend my post above.
It worries me when people deny having prejudices, except when Sophia does.
I strongly suspect she's transcended to a higher level than the rest of us.
Hugs for our Soph.
You guess my point, I guess.
About reading, is just some arguments are like to justify bad behavior instead of understanding and overcome it. Like: human beings are promp to violence. Só you will not turm into pacify yourself because studies say.... Come On....
But The fact is prejudice is a lie, because is a Pre conception that not represent The truth when you brought it to The reality. And I am that person that likes The truth.

Ummm...yeah, bonanata...each of us can choose what to do with the information we have...
...but I don't think prejudice about scientific studies, or choosing ignorance is quite what it takes to evolve...ignorance and, umm, prejudice.
As for so called truth and lies, perspective is another key issue when exploring negative discrimination. Denying other's perspective actively propagates the status quo of discrimination like nothing else.
No denaing any studies and put it in their right place. Studies explain things but dont do your Job as human being. Tuwisting words is a desonest game.
Overcame is for thouse who want to achieve The best they can be. Sime times is just about Finding someone to agree with, to make you feel like "The best" with your minimal effort to contribuit in your joney in The earth.
its not correct.
As prejudice is a way of escape from The reality assuming The situation is that you think is real, but The only way to See the prejudice is experiencing because how to know what if you dont facts to confirm If The concept is true or not.
[quote=2I learned the world has many bigots and prejudices, I've never met a stranger, color, religion creed appearance means nothing. It is what is in the heart. I could be bitter, I had sorry parents. Ended up in a welfare home from 1953-1963 in NY and it was abusive and I was free farm labor. I graduated from HS at 17 and never looked back. I served 20 years in the military, 13 years driving semis and 13 years own my own house painting company.
I live well in my retirement and am 71 yo. Half my family is black. My wife is Spanish and her family ranges from pure white to jet black. My brothers daughters both married black men. No one in my family draws welfare they all work. We love and respect each other. Sadly too many people have to many preconceived ideas about people and I think it is fueled very much by the media and race baiters who live off their own people.
Can anyone seriously tell me what Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton have really done for their people, other then use them.
I moved to a black neighborhood without any prejudice when I was 12.
My black stepdad beat me mercilessly, borrowed the money I earned cleaning yards for soda bottles (for whiskey, wine, beer, and cigarettes) and never paid it back. He molested my sister, cheated on my mom and beat her too.
On the school bus, it was, "Go to the back of the bus white boy," etc, etc.
By the time I left home, I was asking God if black people were the devil.
If it wasn't for the fact that the best friend I ever had in my life was black... I'd probably be prejudice against black people.
Living in a Mexican neighborhood wasn't much better; but at least once they jump you into the gang, you're "one of them."
In Hawaii, I spent a while being treated like a "haole." Now, I usually get called "uncle," or "brother."
Everybody has a reason to be prejudiced. Everybody has a reason to forgive...
Actually, even though I have blond hair and blue eyes... I don't like living around too many white people.
I live in the most diversely populated populated place I could find; and my best friends, are my friend's based on the content of their character.
StarOfWars: You need an options for by the media" and "professional race-baiters"
I'm apparently prejudiced against Irish gypsies I was never thought to be prejudiced by anyone If it is being prejudiced
I learned to be that way from the actions of These gypsies, I can't think of one good Encounter I've had with them so is that being Unfairly prejudiced
