I personally don't think so. Having a similar value system and background as well as common goals is important for me.
As to what makes a relationship work - love, respect, kindness and being with someone captivating, to keep an "interest" in each other intellectual and physical.
In the main " People like people who are like themselves" and the small differences serve to make life interesting.
Two people who are very different rarely succeed as they have little in common, so when life get's stress there's no 'commonality to fall back on in one another' and the stress tends to lead to fractures.

A happy medium between the even couple and the odd couple. Enough commonality between you to keep things tranquil and trusting(i.e. real love)and enough diversity to keep it conflicting and chaotic(i.e. thrills). The best couple is the uneven couple.
It doesn't work for me... I am challenging even to myself and would feel good with someone who isn't afraid to embrace it, for that he sure have to be on my wavelength... Brave, a little crafty, fast thinker, a bit sarcastic, good in "flying kites"...
