We live in a society like we see portrayed in sci-fi films of the future, where the citizens are told they live in bliss and they happily believe it. Yet every one of their movements is monitored, and they activists live in the sewers underneath the city desperately trying to get an uncaring public to open their eyes to reality.

A press is only as good as its journalists and editors and its journalists and editors are only as good as the aggregate of individuals - no better or worse than the average person of their generation. The press is biased and partisan and looking for quick fixes to the same extent as the typical middle aged person.
Nothing really changes until the old show breaks down. The youth who've grown with more trying circumstances than their parents and suffer the consequences of the boomer's abberration of spirit will be different. Integrity and substance will rise as the young replace the old, our problem is keeping it intelligent. The conscience of youth is better, the knowledge is a bit thin on the ground.

the usa,canada and ( western ) europe is not as free as most people think or believe and not as free as the media of those countries portray it to be.

I wish the freedom of press was just that, a freedom to print stories that even though they may embarrass or shame world leaders, or famous people, if it's the truth then maybe we the people should be made aware of the facts, the problem lies with the artificial facts, the trapping of innocent people by unscrupulous journalists.
Something as to be done to stop the fake journalism, bo who do the people turn to? They can only turn to the highest body, which is usually the government. But then the Government see a way to stop themselves being embarrassed, so they create regulations that are way above those needed. those regulations are then ignored and so more lies printed. A vicious circle!!
Or look at the censored press in countries like China, where the control is so strong that only certain news is published and vast amounts of news is kept away from the public, giving a totally false account of events. No lies, just not fully true, like the trolls on CS, they take a story, prune it back keeping just the bits that show themselves in a good light and deceive the public, worse, again like out Trolls, they underestimate the public's resourcefulness to seek out the facts from credible sources.

The "Press is free; free to ban and disregard what their vested controllers tell them to ignore/ expose or cover-up. It has always been so and will continue as long as any public press remains in the hands of corporations or their agents or in the hands of those that choose your politicians and manipulate them as they in fact 'own them'. Seemingly. as a former writer for some of 'the press', the only way to break this total control is to literally torch them all and start all over again with public controls in charge with guarantees that no factions or groups can manipulate the stories or the contents.
