The Black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meagre wage on frivolity or drink; the European has a tradition of work and saving, which has pursued him as far as this corner of America, and drives him to advance himself even independently of his own aspirations.

I like that the kids are impressed by this sensible-sounding grandad with a heart and who treats you like an adult, whilst old people fall at the feet of game-playing overgrown teenagers with no soul who treat you like you're 5(Trump, Johnson).

I reckon all the roles of maturity are reversed. Before the 1960s the longer you'd been on this earth the more likely you were to be wise and think of the longterm, in the modern day it is how long you have left on this earth which makes you care for the future and think of all things grown-ups once did pre-1960s.

There's a perverse individualistic logic to this being the way things are now. If your kids die the day after you die what does it matter? You'll be dead, you won't notice. But no way was civilisation built on these ethics we'd never have got things going in the first place if everyone came to behave like the world ended when they did.

Einstein insisted that the moon was still there when he wasn't looking at it but this is precisely the belief/ethic which is lost. In the modern world nothing exists outside of your perception and nothing matters beyond the date of your death. I suppose it's nihilism and this is what makes old people especially dangerous, if you're 30 chances are you'll have to care about the next 40-50 years but if you're 70 everything will die in 10 years because you will.

You must have had a very sad childhood if you believe parents don't care about their children's future, I genuinely feel sorry for you. But rest assured that most of us parents and grandparents are doing all we can to ensure our families continue, prosper and live happy productive lives just as we have.
Your bitterness and chip on the shoulder is YOUR experience, and not the same for the entire world.

Nothing matters beyond the date of your death could explain why modern society is youth-centric. There are no wise elders to turn to - seniors become like a death cult in modern society - and the only chance of making it is by being the cutting edge. Historically seniors were given the greatest cultural and political clout, but this is no longer a viable option in the context of the speed and motion of this century and the last.

The problem with Jeremy Corbyn(and Donald Trump)is nothing's moved on since the 1980s, A new movement would be 21st century radical with Corbyn as grandfather.
Corbyn doesnt seem able to start a mexican wave, let alone a new world movement. His job as leader of the opposition is to BE the opposition and OPPOSE things!! Hardly see him doing anything let alone what hes meant to be doing.

the dodd frank act as well as corrupt HUD housing,
clinton has his hands dirty over the repeal
of Glass Steagal which was a firewall to keep
the banks out of the junk paper biz.
the banks now have the taxpayer on the hook
for over 4 trillion in derivative gambling debt;
thanks to the bozo signing the last 2 omnibus bills.
